According to the Marine Exchange of .the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce a total of 501 vessels arrived at tho Port of Los Angeles in tho month of September, their aggregate net tonnage being 1,550,871, as against 634 vessels and a tonnage of 1,737,107 tons in the same month last year. NEWSPRINT SHIP’S VOYAGE. For tFio first time the M.-A.-N.Z. Line is sendinga ship from Montreal to Australia via _ the Cape of Good Hope. The Canadian Cruiser will leave Montreal shortly, with newsprint for Fremantle, Adelaide, and Melbourne, and to save making a long trip round Australia will ta'lce the alternative route. PORT JACKSON AT LONDON. The Port Lino motor ship Port Jackson, which left Auckland on October 28, arrived at London on Monday last. THE PURIRI WITH SLAG. The Anchor Shipping Company, Nelson, has received advice that its new motor ship Puriri had successfully completed her trials at Leith at 11.5 knots. She was expected to leave Leith on Monday for Immingham to load basic slag for Auckland. The Puriri will proceed via Panama and arrive there early in January. After discharging at Auckland she will leave for Nelson to enter the company’s coastal services. IMPORTANT CONTRACTS. Harland and Wolfe Xiiraitcd have received an order from the Union-Castle Mail Steamship Company Limited for the conversion of three passenger liners of their “L”-class from coal to oil fuel burning. The work is to be carried out at Belfast, and tbo vessels are the Llan'daff Castle (10,786 tons gross), built by Workman, Clark, and Co. Ltd., in 1926; Llandovery Castle (10,608 tons gross), built by Barclay, Curie, and Co, Limited, in 1925; and Llahstephan Castle (11,299 tons gross), built by tho Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company Limited, in 1914. Harland and Wolfe Limited have secured another important reconditioning contract. They are to reconstruct and redecorate the Canadian Pacific liners Duchess of Atholl, Duchess of Richmond, Duchess of York, and Duchess of Bedford, at a total cost of more than £120,000. The work will be carried out piecemeal at Uvcrpool as each vessel finishes a voyage, and it is expected that all four will be completed early next year. THE NARBADA. The Union Company’s chartered steamer Narbada is now to leave Calcutta on December 5 for Penang, Singapore, and Samarang to complete loading for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton. The Hope Rock shoal has been examined and found to consist of three main rocky patches with least depths of 2J, 3, and 3J fathoms M.L.W.S. in positions 289 deg, 2.1 miles, and 288dcg, 2.03 miles respectively from Okuri light. 'The shoal lies in a 32odeg145deg direction with tho three-fathom patch in the centre, and iis approximately 1.5 cables long by .5 cables wide, with depths of 25 fathoms close around. Its position is latitude 40deg 57min 9seo south, longitude 173tjeg 43miu ssec east approximately.
