LOST MONEY AT CARDS
THEFT CHARGES AGAINST THEATRE MANAGER [Per United Press Association.]
WELLINGTON, November 30. Charged with the theft of a total sum of £lO6 15s, the property of J. C. Williamson Corporation Ltd., while employed as a servant of that company, Cyril Kempt (28), . theatre manager, pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. There were three charges. The accused, who was manager of tho Kilbirnie Theatre, in a statement to the police, admitted retaining the money for his own use. The reason for tho lapse was that he had lost a great deal of money through playing cards. He had since played cards and backed horses in order to recoup his losses. He had not used the money in repaying his debts but in playing cards in order to get money to pay his debts. At one time he had owed £2OO. It was later that he went of his own free will to the executive officers of the cbmipany and made a voluntary confession.
