AMATEUR ATHLETICS

PROPOSED VISIT OF AMERICANS DATES FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS [Peb United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, November 29. Information is to be sought from the American Athletic Union as to the prospects of American athletes visiting New Zealand in 1940, following a decision made by the council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, at its annual meeting to-night. A .communication from the English Amateur Athletic Association confirmed the cabled advice already received that the board had declined with regret the New Zealand Association’s invitation for British athletes to tour the Dominion in 1940. The difficulty, it was stated,,was that the period would be close to that of the Olympic Games. The secretary reported that there was no definite reply from any other country. The invitation was to have been considered by the Canadian authorities this month. The venues and dates for the various national championships were adopted as follows:

New Zealand Track and Field Championships.—l 939, March ID and 11, at Napier; 1940, at Wellington. Women’s and Junior Championships. —March 25, 1939, at Auckland. Cross-country Championships, 1939. —Hawke’s Bay. Remits from the Dominion Harrier Conference were the subject of a report by a sub-committee of the council. It was decided to indicate the council’s approval of marathon championships in the centres, the decision to hold' a national marathon championship having already been made in the committee’s recommendation. It was decided to name May 31 as the latest time for the centre holding the national • cross-country championships to fix the date. In reply to an Auckland suggestion that junior athletes be prevented from competing in the national senior championships, the council decided to adhere to its former decision that they be left free to do so.

Affiliation was granted to the Royal New Zealand Air Force (Wigram) A.A.C., and reinstatement was granted W. J. Potter (Matamata).
