Cox, of the clerical staff of the Chief Post Office, who retired to-day after 40 years’ service, was farewelled by the staff this afternoon and presented with a token 5f remembrance. Mr Douglas Spedding returned yesterday after attending a meeting of the council of the New Zealand Rugby Union at Wellington. Reference was made to the death, of Air Ewen Cameron by the chairman of directors (Air J. S. Hislop) at the sixty-fifth annual meeting of the Alosgiol Woollen Factory Company Ltd. Air Cameron, he said, had served the company faithfully and well for many years.
At the monthly meeting of the Alosgiel School Committee Captain Jones resigned the chairmanship on account of his approaching departure-from the town. A motion was passed thanking him for his services on the committee 1
in the interests of the school. Miss Cora Duff and Mr Leo Schmelta will leave by the express for the south on Monday tc join the Maunganui at Bluff. They will appear in Melbourne on the following Saturday night in the dancing championship, the first prize for which is a motor car valued at £550.
Two administrative .appointments in. the Post . and Telegraph Department were announced last evening by the Postmaster-General (Mr Jones). The second . deptuy director-general of the department, Mr J. G. Young’, has been appointed deputy. director-general ,as from November 1. This position was previously held by Mr F. J. Shanks, who recently retired on superannuation* The vacancy created by the promotion, of Mr Young has been filled by the appointment of Mr W. R. Newall, divisional principal, General Post .Office, Wellington, to the position of second deputy director-general. Staying at the City Hotel are Mr and Mrs Arnold Johnson (Sydney), Mr T.
