CRICKET

COUNTRY WEEK MATCHES FIRST DAY’S PLAY Country Week, organised by the Otago Cricket Association, was advanced one stage yesterday at the University Oval, Logan Park, when Southland and North Otago registered substantial wins over Vincent and South Otago respectively. Both the winning sides scored heavily, and two individual centuries were made. SOUTHLAND v. VINCENT. Continuing after' the luncheon adjournment with six wickets down for 99, Vincent were all out for 135. F. Partridge carried his total to 65, and was unbeaten when the innings closed. His was a bright knock in which he took some risks. Purdue put up an excellent bowling performance by taking five wickets for 36 runs off less than 16 overs. Uttley and Spence opened for Southland, and almost immediately steady scoring commenced. Uttley particularly laid on to anything loose, while Spence watched the ball carefully. Ten after ten was hoisted on the board despite many changes of bowling, until at 125 Spence was caught for a sound 44. Saxton carried on with Uttley, and the latter shortly passed his hundred. When 111 he stepped out to Pierce, missed, and was smartly stumped. 170—2-—lll. Cutler, batting_ attractively, made 24 before being given out Ibw, and Saxton was_ caught behind the wickets for a nicely made 29. Scandrett and M'Gowan took heavy toll of the tired bowling and loose fielding, the former getting a quick 69 and the latter 37. not out. At 6.30 stumps were drawn with the score at 325. for six, Southland winning by four wickets and 190 runs. Details

NORTH OTAGO v. SOUTH OTAGO. At the luncheon adjournment yesterday North Otago had lost six' wickets for 196, with Kinder not out 68. This player continued to bat in excellent style and passed the hundred in just over even time. At 107 he was caught off Brownlie, and eight wickets were down for 261. Cameron and Irvine here got together, and a lively partner--1 ship added just 46 runs, at which stage the innings was declared closed. Parker’s five wickets for 86 runs off 18 overs was, in the circumstances, a really good performance. South Otago batsmen found their northern opponents well equipped for attack and wickets fell steadily. Smith (32) and Tomkinson (18) offered some resistance for the third wicket, but discreet changes in bowling eventually separated the pair and disposed of the remainder, none of whom reached double figures. Cameron, a likelylooking left-hander, took four wickets for 20 off 16.2 overs. North Otago won by 217 runs. Details;—. NORTH OTAGO.

SCHOOL V. OLD BOYS OTAGO HIGH ANNUAL FIXTURE The annual match between the High School Old Boys’ Club and the High School first eleven was played on the school ground on Wednesday, and resulted m a win for School by 12 runs. This was a very meritorious performance, in view of the fact that the Old 803 - s’ team comprised eight senior and three intermediate players. The School, batting first, compiled 120, Somerville (17), Partridge (20), Rennie (20), and Freeman (18), all of whom batted soundly, but especially the two first-named, who opened the innings and displayed a variety of scoring shots. the captain, hit hard and scored quickly. Every member of the Old Boys’ team except the wicketkeeper was given a trial with the ball. Old Boys responded with 108, top scorers being Hunt (32 not out), Walls (21), and Leader (14). The School bowling was very steady, Mowat, Partridge, and Somerville being able to extract a bit of life from a somewhat dead wicket. Partridge, trying to bowl too fast, was rather erratic, however, but by changes in pace kept the batsmen on the defensive, until he lost his length in the last three overs. Somerville’s slow spinners showed promise. School’s fielding was very keen, and the two run-outs were the result of smart returns. Freeman took two excellent slip catches. The good showing by the team as a whole is very heartening in view of the match with Christ’s College next month. Details: — SCHOOL. First Innings. Somerville b L. Groves 17 Partridge b L.
