UNEMPLOYED WORKERS

MEETING OF DUNEDIN BRANCH The executive of the Dunedin branch’ of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement met last night, Mr G. Pollock (vice-president) in the chair. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of a member who had passed away, was carried. Correspondence was received from the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Railways; secretary, N.U.W.M., Wellington ; Dunedin Federation of Labour Council, Spanish - Medical Aid Committee, local Labour Bureau, and other organisations. The organising report showed that 82 men had been granted clearances since last meeting, old age pension 4, invalidity pension 2, and over 70 men had received full-time work. The Secretary submitted ‘ the quarterly financial statement, which showed the branch to be in a very satisfactoryposition at present. The balance sheet was adopted without question._ The matter of the nomination of a delegate to the international conference at Geneva was left in the hands of delegates to support at the meeting of the Otago Trades Council next month. A complaint of victimisation of one of the members was left in the hands of the delegates to support.. - In regard to the fees to the Federation of Labour in Wellington, it was stated that this matter had to again come up for consideration at the meeting of the executive next month. The following resolution was carried i “ That in view of the recent disclosures in connection with the accommodation of the waitresses of a Dunedin hotel, this movement is of the opinion that the inspector has been failing in his duty, and we recommend that a thorough investigation be immediately instituted to avoid similar conditions - prevailing.” The Secretary intimated that he still attended the local-labour bureau, both in regard to ballots and any complaints received from the men. It was agreed to write to the general secretary in Wellington, giving all information as far as the unemployed in Dunedin were concerned.
