POULTRY ASSOCIATION

SOUTH ISLAND SECTION THE ANNUAL MEETING The thirty-ninth annual meeting of the South Island (N.Z.) Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association was commenced last night. The president (Hr G. H. Bradford) presided and extended a welcome to those present and expressed the hope that the association would experience a successful year. Annual Report The annual repiprt stated that 28 societies were affiliated with the association, which was four fewer than in 1937. The four societies were the Dunedin Young Bird Club, the Dunedin Canary Club, the Waiau Society and the Dunedin Pigeon Club. Three of these clubs found it necessary, owing to local conditions, to disband, and the Dunedin Canary Club resigned from the association. The shows during the year ritfiit through the South Island were up considerably in entries —a very encouraging feature, both to show officials and competitors. The public had supported the fixtures better than for some years, and the association could with confidence predict a good show season for 1939. The number of South Island championships allotted to the 1938 shows was 103. and in 16 there were no entries or no award made. On account of the Waiau and Westport Shows not being held, eight championships were cancelled, which was unfortunate. Out of the balance of 84, the number of championship certificates won was 79. a very high percentage, which spoke well for the quality of the exhibits at the shows. At the 1937 conference 19 New Zealand championships were applied for, and the conference granted them all, in place of the 15 decided upon previously. The Victory Shield was competed for at the Hokitika Show, and was won by Mr M. P. Lynch, of Greymouth with a strong team of cinnamon Yorkshire canaries in the unflighted yellow variegated class. During the year the association had suffered the loss of two valued members in Mr A. Munyard. secretary of the Tapanui Club, and Mr G S Bishop, secretary of the Invercargill Club, who died prior to the last show season. , , . . The balance sheet showed that the receipts during the year totalled £275 6s 6d and the expenditure £72 18s lOd. leaving a credit balance of £202 7s Bd. Mr G. S. Nicoll (Ashburton) congratulated the council on the excellent balance sheet presented, which reflected great credit on the executive members and the secretary. Congratulations were extended by Mr C. Barclay (Dunedin) to the president on winning the Tumbler Championship outright after 15 years’ competition in this event. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr T. A. Brown (Dunedin), the report and balance sheet were adopted, both the mover and the seconder complimenting the secretary on his work during the year.
