NORTH OTAGO NOTES

[From Our Oamard Correspondent.] BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Oamaru Borough Council met last night. A letter from the Minister of Railways advising that the department could not authorise the erection of a stone wall along Humber street, but would grant £llos a chain if the council decided to build the wall, was referred to the Works Committee. A grant of £5 was made to the Oamaru Swimming Club fey “ learn-to-swim ” week. A quotation for thei supply of cycle stands was referred to the By-laws Committee.. The North Otago Automobile Association’s suggestions for signs at the South African Memorial were referred to the By-laws Committee. Arrangements for the disposal of storm water having been made, it was agreed to. release the petition for the inclusion of the Dart street housing area in the borough. Crs E. W. Grenfell, J. C. Kirkness, and E. D. Watts were appointed a District Committee under the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act. The abattoirs manager (Mr A. A. Mays) reported that during the month 41 cows, 152 heifers and steers, 720 sheep, ,11 pigs, and 1 calf had been . slaughtered. When it was proposed that a permanent carpenter be employed by the council, Cr A. R. Tait opposed it because it had not been provided for in the estimates. He said he was alarmed ' at the way the council’s finances were drifting. Cr A. Wilson agreed to report fully on the reorganisation of the stare at next meeting. On the recommendation of an emergency meeting, it was decided to employ N.M'Leod as quarry foreman, ft was pointed out that the quarry was to bo kept open throughout the year to crush sufficient metal to expedite tar-sealing work. SWIMMING BATHS. 0r L. Douglas and Mr S. C., Miller, of the Oamaru Swimming Club, waited on the Oamaru Borough Council last evening and suggested improvements to the Public Baths, including filtration and sun-heat;tic. hot showers, beginners’ and paddling nools, and attractive surroundings. Heatmg and filtration would cost £2.000 and the whole scheme about £4.000. The matter was referred to a committee, comprising .Crs F. Butterfield. F,. W. Grenfell, A. Wilson, and G. A. Mitchell, for a report. AMBULANCE WORK. A presentation of certificates to memb°;s of first aid classes, conducted at the Waitaki Boys’ High School by ' Cadet-superintendent G.
