I —Ministerial. The Hon. F. Jones, Postmaster-* General and Minister of Defence, arrived by air from the north yesterday afternoon. Mr F, M. At the monthly meeting of the_ Hospital Board last night the chairman (Mr J. W. Dove), Messrs A. Steel, and A. F. Quelch were appointed to represeht the board at the conference of the Hospital Boards Association, to be held at New Plymouth on February 7 next. The secretary (Mr J. Jacobs), and the medical superintendent (Dr J. Thomson) will also attend the conference.

The appointment of Mr George Patrick Shepherd as a judge of the Native Land Court for Akaroa and the South Island Native Land Court district was gazetted last night, as was the appointment of Mr John Harvey as a judge of the Native Land Court for tha Waiariki Native Land Court district.

Bowerbank, honorary physician to the Governor-General, as Director of Medical Services is extended to _ November 30, 1939, according to a notice appearing in last night’s ‘ Gazette.’ Mr J. S. Wilson, camp chief at Gilwell Park, the London training centre of the Boy Scout Association, has been appointed to represent the World Chief Scout, Lord Baden-Powell, of Gilwell and Imperial headquarters, at the New Zealand centennial jamboree to be held at Heretaunga, Hutt Valley, at the end of next year. Jgmboree headquarters has received notification from London that Mr Wilson will be attending the jamboree and will possibly be accompanied by* a number of English Scouts. At the meeting of the Hospital Board last night it was reported that the Minister of Health had forwarded his approval of the appointment of Dr R. S. Trueman as senior resident surgical officer. The chairman (Mr J. W. Dove) said that Dr Trueman had been cabled in England to that effect. Mr Robert Moffat, senior inspector of the National Bank of New Zealand Ltd., retired this month on pension, some 18 months before his normal date of retirement, Mr Moffat entered the service of the bank at Milton 40 years ago, and during the last 18 years has served in an executive capacity—as manager in Hastings, Te Aro, and Dunedin, and for two periods as inspector at the general manager’s office, first as branch inspector_ and during the past four years as senior inspector. Because of a recent unfortunate disability affecting his sight, Mr Moffat, on medical advice, sought retirement from the bank’s service. Dr Murray A. Falconer, F.R.C.S., left by air yesterday to take up his new appointment as Nuffield assistant in surgery at Oxford University. Dr Falconer, who is a son of Dr A. R. Faleonfr of this city, qualified in 1933 from the Otago Medical School, and after spending a year as house surgeon at the Dunedin Hospital, he went to Great Britain. There he held successive appointments as pathology assistant to Professor H. M. Turnbull _at the London Hospital, house physician to Lord Horder at the British Postgraduate Medical School, clinical assistant at the Chelsea Hospital for women, and surgical registrar at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Largely because of the surgical research work which he carried out at Aberdeen, Dr Falconer was appointed last year assistant in surgery at the Mayo CHnio in the United States On the completion of this appointment he returned to New Zealand for a brief visit. At his new appointment in Oxford, Dr Falconer will specialise in neurological and general surgery under Professor Hugh Cairns.
