—Ministerial.— The Minister of Education and Health (Hon. P. Fraser) visited the Seadliff Mental Hospital to-day, and to-morrow morning at 10.30 he will lay the foundation stone of the new Training College building near Logan Park. The Minister will also be present at the Primary Schools -Sports Association annual gathering at Logan Park tomorrow afternoon, and will leave for the north on Sunday. Mr John Macdonald, of Invercargill, was a through passenger for Wellington by the express from the south this morning. Mr A. S. Falconer returned yesterday from Wellington. Captain Sfpence, of Wellington, _ has been appointed Sea Scout commissioner for New Zealand. Mr F. S. Avent returned yesterday from a visit to Great" Britain. Dr E. Marsden, Director of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, is at present visiting Dunedin. Mr J. H. Duncan, general manager of Messrs H. L. Tapley and Co. Ltd., has been appointed a local director of the Queensland Insurance . Company ,Ltd. The Harbour Board, at its meeting last night, passed a motion of condolence with the relatives of Mr James Findlay, New Zealand representative of the Shaw Savill and Albion Shipping Company, who died recently. Latest mails from England state that Lord Beatty, who has made an excellent recovery from his accident in February, was to have left by the Aquitania on October 19 on a voyage round the world in the hope that it would complete his convalescence. Lady Beatty was to accompany him. Lord Beatty is chairman of the Navy League, and will take the opportunity of visiting the league's branches in New Zealand and Australia. Christmas and the New Year will be spent crossing the Pacific. Lord and Lady Beatty are due to arrive at Auckland on January 9. After a tour through New Zealand they will go on to Australia and finally will leave that country on March 6 for England, arriving there in the spring of 1939.

Mr E. P. V. Sealy, who has been manager of the Wanganui branch of the National Bank of New Zealandl Ltd. for the past 10 years, will retire on superannuation at the end of this year, after completing approximately 42 years of service. He will be succeeded by Mr J. L. Barriball, manager at Pukdsohe, whose successor will ba Mr A. M. Walters, at present manager at IRuawai. Mr H. S. Whyte, accountant at Oamaru, has been appointed manager at ißuawai, and Mr L. Marsden, of the general manager’s office, Wellington, has been appointed accountant at Oamaru.

The Rev. Laurence A. North, formerly minister of the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church, Christchurch, was elected general secretary of the Baptist Union of New Zealand and treasurer of the Baptist Missionary Society at yesterday’s session of the annual New Zealand Baptist Assembly now meeting at Wellington, Mr North will take up his new appointment at the conclusion of the Assembly. He will replace the present secretary, the Rev. M. W. P, .Lascelles, who has announced his intention to retire after, occupying the office for 16 years. Tributes were paid at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateufi Rowing Association held at Wellington yesterday to the work of Mr A. D. Bayfield, of Wellington, who, after 32 years’ service, retired for business treasons from the position of secretary. Air A. M. Hale (Marlborough) said it required enthusiasm of the highest order to produce year after year such a comprehensive annual report as Mr Bayfield did. In addition, he was always willing to supply information which would assist the council. It was decided to place on record appreciation of his work for rowing during his 32 years as secretary. “ 1 can assure you my interest in the association and in the sport of amateur 'rowing will not cease, said Air Bayfield. When he took over the position he little thought it would be for 32 years, but as he looked back he thought it had been time very well spent. He congratulated his successor, Mr T. M. Hinkley, of Wellington, on his appointment. Mr R. S. M'Kenzie returned from Wellington by car last evening. A distinguished Scotsman, the Very Rev. Dr Dugald Alacfarlane, formerly Aloderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, arrived at Auckland to-day by the Monterey. He will attend the Presbyterian General Assembly at Dunedin next week. After visiting Dunedin he will go ,to Hawke’s Bay, where he has relatives.—Press Association.
