LAWN TENNIS

IBv Recorder.] Fixtures, November 5. Handicap mixed doubles tournament for the M'Millan Cup, at Logan Park. Interclub Matches. A further round of the intermediate and C grade matches was played last Saturday. Owing to the Labour Day week-end a number of matches were not played, and these are being contested in the evenings. In connection with the games played in the evenings, captains of winning teams must see that the result of their match is forwarded to the secretary of the association. In the only A grade match played University registered its third victory when it defeated Mornington for the loss of only one match. Smith gave an excellent display against Paterson, outplaying his opponent to win for the loss of only two games. Paterson has so far not produced his form of last Easter. He requires a lot of hard practice against some of the first dozen men in Dunedin before he will be able to hold his own as first man in an A grade team. Childs was erratic in his match against Sutherland, who placed a good performance to his credit in defeating the Varsity man. The remaining matches were all won by University in straight sets. The unfinished ladies’ match between Roslyn and Kaituna was completed, and resulted in a victory for Roslyn by 4 matches to 2. Mrs Borthwick proved much too steady for Mrs Clayton, while in the second ladies’ doubles Mrs Borthwick and Miss D. Rackley combined better than the Kaituna ladies.

In the intermediate grade St. Clair was fully extended by St. Patrick’s and just managed to will out by five games, sets being even. The St. Clair men won their six matches, but the St. Patrick’s ladies nearly evened the score by winning five of their six matches. M'Kenzie and Mrs Fowler were the only St. Clair pair to win a mixed double, the better combination of the St. Patrick’s pair giving them three victories. Waimana easily accounted for Kaituna by 13 matches to 3, Stewart, of Kaituna, figuring in two of Kaituna's three victories. Two wins by large margins wore also registered in the second section, Cosy Dell defeating St. Mary’s for the loss of only two matches, and Tainui defeating Moana 11. by 13 matches to 3. “ Bob ” Wilkie. An interesting visitor to Logan Park last Saturday afternoon was Mr R A. Wilkie, better known to the older generation of Dunedin tennis players as “Bob.” Wilkie'. Mr Wilkie is nowliving in Australia, and has.given the game best. However, 25 jeans or ’more ago he was one .of Dunedin’s leading players in the days when Otago men could more than hold their own with any province in New Zealand. As a member of the Kaituna Club he was one of the leading players in its A grade team which for so many years w-on the A grade banner. Mr Wilkie won the Otago doubles championship with W. Bray in 1921 and with George Clark in 1922. He. represented Otago on numerous occasions, and frequently captained the Otago team. He was a left-handed player with a tremendous forehand drive which rose very little off the ground, and was a hard volleyer and smasher. Waimate Tournament. Leading players from Oamaru and Dunedin took part in the Waimate tournament, played last week-end. While the numbers were not as large as last year’s jubilee tournament, the entries were quite satisfactory. The visiting players included Miss D. Miller, Miss Corrigal, Feathers, M'Kenzie and Green, of Oamaru, and Mrs Rawlinson, Miss Kerr, C. Robertson, S. Falconer, and J. Rawlinson, of Dunedin. The four men members of the St. Kilda Club’s intermediate team also took part in the tournament.

The men’s singles was won by M'Kenzie, of Oamaru. who after defeating Rawlinson in a closely-contested threeset match in the first round went on to defeat Falconer in straight sets and Robertson 6-2 in the third set. The match between M‘Kenzie and Robertson was the final, and the Otago man had a chance for victory when after winning the first set he led 5-2 in the second. M'Kenzie, however, managed to take the nest four games.. for set and went on to give an excellent display in winning the final set. M‘Kenzie served and smashed well irt all his games, and won numerous points with a hard- half volley

The men’s doubles was won by the Dunedin pail, Robertson and Falconer, who defeated Feathers and Green, 6-4, 6-3 in the final. This was one of the best matches of the tournament, and the Dunedin players earned their victory, having more finish to their play than their opponents. As was to be expected, Miss Miller was never extended to win the ladies’ singles, only one game being scored against her. The ladies’ doubles went to Miss Miller and Miss Corrigal, of Oamaru, the runners-up being Mrs Rawlinson and Miss Kerr, of Dunedin. The final of the mixed doubles was played between Feathers and Miss Miller and Falconer and Miss Kerr the former pair winning at 9-5, This match took place late in the evening, and only a 9-up game could be played. Both the Oamaru players did a fair amount of lobbing and were content to wait for their opponents to make mistakes.

The ladies’ handicap singles was won by Miss M. Kerr, of Dunedin, who placed a good performance to her credit in winning this event from the owe 30 mark Union Notes. D Grade.—Musselburgh beat Anderson’s Bay by 12 sets to 4. This match was not so one-sided as the result indicates, as several games were very close with long rallies Misses J. and R Caddie and Park won their sets for Musselburgh, and played good tennis, while F. Brixton and Campbell and Misses Sproat and Brooks played well for Anderson’s Bay. Kensington beat St. Kilda Methodists by 11 sets to 5, and this also w'as a close game. Keen and Miss Keen won their three sets for Kensington, and with Johnson, Misses Sheppard and Sims playing well, this team should improve greatly For St. Kilda Mi ss Miller won her three sets, while the play of Ashby and Bartlett was of a high order.
