CLEANER BATHS
TREATMENT OF WATER CONTRACTS IN AUCKLAND Before the end of the present summer complete water treatment plants will have been installed at the Parnell and Shelly Beach saltwater baths. At present the only treatment received by the water is chlorination, which is carried out when the baths are being filled, but with filtration and chemical treatment. aeration and sterilisation, it will be possible to turn the water over frequently and keep it in good condition without admitting further “ raw ” water from the harbour at such frequent intervals (says the Auckland ‘ Herald ’). Contracts have been let to Candy Filters (New Zealand) Limited for the new plants, the cost for Parnell being £4,231, and for Shelly Beach £3.286 Work on the installation has been started at the Parnell Bath, where the necessary under-water pipes are being placed in position. However, to enable swimmers to use the bath during the Labour Day week-end. the pool was filled on Saturday, and will later be drained to enable the work to proceed There will be about another’s month’s work on the_ under-water equipment, and by the time that is completed the treatment plant will have arrived from England The contract called for the whole installation to be in working order within 26 weeks, so that it will be February or March before the now system is m operation. With the now plant the water will be pumped through filters, and will be aerated and chemically treated to deal with any bacteria before being returned to the bath. The capacity of the Parnell bath is 930,000 gallons, and as the water is to be turned over every 11 or 12 hours the plant will require to move 80.000 gallons an hour. The work at Shelly Beach will be put in hand later. The capacity of that hath is 321 000 gallons, and with a turnover in eight hours the pumping mre will require to be 40,000 gallons an hour.
