MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD The monthly meeting of the Harbour Board was held last night, there being present the chairman (Hr W. Begg), Messrs F. E. Tyson, D. F. H. Sharpe, T. Scollay, J. Preston, 11. S. Thompson, J. B. Waters, W. R. Clarke, R. Duncan, R. Walls, .]. H. Duncan, A. Campbell, J. W. Munro, M.P., and A. Smith. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer reported that during the month of September the dredge Otakou lifted 28 loads, totalling 36,680 cubic yards. The dredge steamed 642 mSes and consumed 118.96 tons of fuel oil. During the month the dredge Vulcan pumped 7,120 cubic yards of material received from the dredge Otakou into the Mussel Bay reclamation area. The electric crane was in operation for 23J hours, four of which were in the board’s service, and the sheerlegs for 6$ hours. ’ The connecting up of the new Leith Canal on the lower side of the Anzac Avenue bridge was completed, and although the walling and floor slab above the bridge were not finished, there was now a clear waterway in the new channel from Harbour Terrace to the railway bridge. A total of 1,480 square feet of decking had been laid and spiked down on the George street pier. The laying of the sidings by the Railway Department was nearing completion, and the fitting of the remaining decking, kerbing, and crane rails was being pushed forward, and it was expected that the berth would bo available before the end of November. The demolition of the old work in the portion of the Birch street wharf at present under construction had been completed, and a beginning had been made to drive the outer rows of piles in deep water. An early commencement was to be made with the demolition of the remaining portion of tho

old wharf, and to speed np the work additional men would be placed on the job. The formation of the roadway on the south side of the canal below Anzac Avenue was continued, and to date 11 chains of roadway had been formed and pitched with stone. The report was adopted. arrivals and departures. Forty vessels, aggregating 71,G28 tons, arrived at Dunedin wharves during the month of September, while 18 vessels, aggregating 45,507 tons, arrived at Port Chalmers, the harbour master reported. Departures from the two ports respectively were 42 vessels, totalling 68,355 tons, and 18 vessels, totalling 47,187 tons. Of the 58 arrivals during the month 38 were coastal vessels, 5 intercolonial. 14 oversea, and 1 warship. The 60 departures were made up of 38 coastal vessels, 7 intercolonial, and 15 oversea. FINANCE. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £9,604 0s 6d.
