Visitors not familiar with the scenic drives round the city have consistently lauded the view of the harbour from the Upper Portobello road. Their only lament has been about the condition of the road itself. Because of the straitened finances of the Peninsula County Council it has come to the decision that even if a subsidy to improve this drive from the city to Portobello were granted by the Government, the repairs possible would not be permanent. Overtures are to be made to the Government to tar-seal the entire eight-mile stretch, and to that end various local bodies, with local member's of Parliament, are to bold a meeting on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the best method of advocating the claims of this picturesque drive and the need for a radical improvement in the state pf the road.
