SUCCESSFUL TRIALS. NEW UNION STEAMER WAIPORI. Cabled advice lias been received by the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand Ltd. that their new cargo steamer Waipovi, which was launched from the yards of .Hawthorn, Leslie, and Co., at Newcastle-oii-Tyno on duly 23 last, carried out successful trials on October 21, and sailed on October /o for Rotterdam to load for New Zealand A single-screw Ishenvood Arcform vessel, specially built for the intercolonial cargo trade and with a dearlweight earning capacity of G,(100 tons, the Waipori is of the following dimensions: —Length overall, 71ft tin; breadth, 55ft; and depth, to upper deck, 23ft Gin. Three insulated compartments for the carriage of perishable cargoes are provided in the alter ’tween decks. The cellular double bottom is subdivided for the carriage of oil fuel, water ballast, feed and fresh water, and water ballast can also be carried in the fore and after peaks. The cargo-handling appliances comprise 12 special steam winches, and 13 steel derricks, including one of 25 tons lifting capacity on the mainmast. A steam windlass, steam warping winch, and steam tiller-type steering gear complete the dock auxiliaries. The captain, officers, and engineers are accommodated in deckhouses amidships. The main machinery, manufm hired by the North-eastern Marine Engineering Company (19118) Ltd., consists of a sot of singlc-scrcw, tripleexpansion engines, steamed from three isingle-cnginccl multitubular boilers, which gives the vessel a service speed of 12 knots. PONTYPRIDD FOR AUCKLAND, The steamer Pontypridd left Nauru Island on October 20 with phospates for discharge at Auckland and Wanganui, She is due at Auckland on Monday. GALE AND MIRO. Gale was to come to Dunedin from Port Chalmers at 3 o’clock this afternoon, while the Mire was expected at the cross wharf between 2 and 3 o’clock. ARAWA ADVISES. The National Mortgage and Agency Company advises that the Arawa has radioed that she expects to arrive at Wellington at midnight on Thursday next from Southampton. MATAROA’S FINAL DATE. The Shaw Savill and Albion liner Mataroa is now to sail finally from Auckland at noon on November 5 for Southampton and London via Panama. G. S. WALDEN AND ORA. Cabled advice has boon received that the British motor tanker G. S. Walden left Sumatra on October 18 for Auckland, where she is due about November 5, “Wellington., Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She will discharge to the Vacuum Oil Company. The same company has chartered the Norwegian motor tanker Ora, which will leave San Francisco on Thursday for Auckland, Wellington, and Lyttelton. The Ora, of 9,537 tons gross, was launched last year. She should arrive at Auckland about November 24.

UNION COMPANY CHARTER. The British motor ship Riley, of 4 993 tons gross, has been taken on time charter by the Union Steam Ship Company. The Riley, which was built at Sunderland in 1936, was due at Sydney on October 24 from Vancouver. INTERISLAND EXPRESS. The interisland express steamer Wahino arrived at Lyttelton from Wellington at 6.40 this morning. Passengers and mails for the south connected with the express. N.S.W. COASTAL SHIPS. OBJECTION TO IMPORTATION. i Members of shipbuilding and shiprepairing unions at mass meetings will be asked to refuse to do any docking or repairing of any kind to any vessel trading in the harbour or on the coast of New South Wales imported from outside Australia after April 1, 1939. A conference of delegates from shipbuilding and ship-repairing unions at the Trades Hall, Sydney, _ decided xo recommend this course of action to members. The conference also decided to seek the co-operation of all labour councils in Now South "Wales and other States of the Commonwealth. The delegates asserted that since the Great War, many thousands of pounds had been spent oversea.! for the building of ships for the Australian coastal trade. LONDON’S SHIPPING. During the week ended September 30, 965 vessels, representing 1,057,594 net register tons, used the Port of London. Of these, 517 vessels (872,690 net register tons) were to ami from Empire and foreign ports, and 448 vessels (154.89 S net register tons) were engaged in coastwise traffic. Tho New Zealand Shipping Company advises that tho Rangitata arrived at Colon yesterday morning from London, whence she sailed on October 13. She is due at Wellington on Novcmbei 16.
