EXHIBITION YEAR FIXTURES PRELIMINARY ARRANGEMENTS [Pee United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, June 1. Preliminary arrangements for organising tlio conduct in Wellington during 'the Centennial Exhibition, from November, 1939, to May, 1940, of what promises to be the greatest series of sporting events ever held in one season
in the Dominion were discussed tonight, when some 40 representatives of national and Wellington sports bodies met the directors of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition Company Ltd. As a result of the discussion, the meeting formed itself into a general sports committee and appointed an executive of one representative of each of the organisations which proposes, to hold its national championships in Wellington that year to effect a co-ordination of the proposed dates, and work in co-oporution with .the Sports Committee of the Exhibition Company’s directorate. The Mayor of Wellington (Mr T. C. A. Hislop), chairman of the Board of Directors of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition Company, who presided,
said it was going to bo a great advantage to all the sporting fraternity to have their big events in Wellington during the period of the exhibition. There would be tens of thousands of people attending the exhibition, and they would bo available to watch the various athletic contests which might be arranged. The holding of the events in Wellington would also help the exhibitiou. “It is clearly to our mutual advantage that that should be so,” Mr Hislop said. At the moment, the company bad made no provision for sports grounds, but the existing grounds would be available. There might also be some suggestion in connection with the stadium as a possible ground, but there hud been no negotiations as yet.
