IF THEY DRIVE TO-DAY
HALF NOT LICENSED 7,500 LIABLE TO PROSECUTION f Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH. June 1. Only a few more than half of the people holding motor driving licenses issued by the Christchurch City Council last year have so far taken out licenses for 1938-39. The licenses issued to-day numbered 701, bringing the total to 8,518 out of 16,005 issued last year, so that approximately 7,500 people lay themselves open to prosecution if they take their cars out on the road to-morrow. The 8,518 people who have taken out new licenses were not all drivers last year, for the number includes about 140 persons who qualified for licenses by tests during'May. The number of new motor licenses taken out on May 31 was 1,447, making a total of 11,971. This total was greater by more than 1,000 than the total at May 31 last year, which was 10,681.
