MAYORAL CONTEST

RECOUNT CONCLUDED MR ALLEN’S MAJORITY SLIGHTLY REDUCED The recount of votes cast at the poll on tho mayoral issue was completed this morning, with tho result that the original figures were altered slightly, the number of recorded votes being increased by 166, and Mr Allen s majority decreased by 120. _ Xhe margin in his favour, however, is sl l the substantial one of 4,038. The number of informal votes cast is now stated at 212, as compared with 231 announced after the first count, a number of these votes winch had on the first count been deemed informal being found to more or less indicate the clear intention of the voter. The new mayor assumes office on Wednesday next, the date of the installation. The scrutiny of some 170 declaration votes was also completed this morning ; and the recounting of the votes on the remaining issues—tho City Council, Harbour Board, and Hospital Board—is proceeding steadily. This work will be completed early in the week, when the final figures will be announced. There are always alterations in the figures after a recount, apd as the number of votes polled Messrs W. A. Nowell and E. J. Smith respectively were fairly close the formers tally being 14,478 and the latter’s 14,403 — the narrowness of the margin makes the issue interesting. But even should tho positions of these two candidates be reversed, it would not mean any alteration in “ ticket ” representation, both Mr Newall and Mr Smith being nominees of the Citizens’ Association. So far, no information is available as to progress figures.
