FORBURY PARK TROTS

Meeting Successfully Opened Worthy King Wins Flying Handicap Tha weather was fine, but dull and chilly, for the opening day of the Winter Meeting at Forbury Park yesterday afternoon, and the attendance, after the first two races, was satisfactory. The track was in first-class order, and, though no fresh records were established, all placed horses went well inside their classified* tions. The racing was interesting throughout the programme, but backers of first favourites had another bad day, only two of them being returned winners. The downfall of strongly backed favourites in the last five races no doubt seriously affected the totalisator turnover. In connection with the running of Jackaranda in the Domain Handicap, the driver, C. S. Donald, was asked for an explanation. Proof was forthcoming that the horse’s connections had backed him for a considerable sum. Donald explained that the horse is only a three-year-old, and would have had to go round a big held. He waited for an opening, but could not get this, and when he went out on the outside he could do no better than he did. The explanation was accepted. Last year the opening day of this meeting was held on Coronation Day, a public holiday, when £28,556 passed through the totalisator. Yesterday only £16,121 was handled, but, compared with the corresponding day in 1936, this amount was £1,178 10s better.
