CITRUS FRUIT CONTROL
IMPORTATION BAN [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTONj May 12. In a statement to-day the Minister of Customs and Marketing (Mr W. Nash) announced that an order appears in this week’s Gazette prohibiting the importation, save with the consent of the Minister of Customs, of oranges, mandarins, grape-fruit, lemons and bananas. The order is effective in respect of such fruit from all countries, including the Cook Islands. “As previously announced, it is the Government’s plan to organise the marketing of imported citrus fruits and bananas within the Dominion through the Internal Marketing Division as the sole Dominion importer,” Mr Nash stated. “It is for the purpose of giving effect to this policy that prohibition has been made.
“ It is understood,” Mr Nash continued, “ that a number of importers have made commitments for the purchase of citrus fruit from California, arriving at Auckland by the Monterey on May 13, the Niagara on May 30, the Tolten on June 6, and the Aorangi on June 26. Special permission will, therefore, be granted to importers who desire to handle their own consignments by these boats.”
