(Received May 13, at 2 p.m.) At the wool sales 9,905 bales were offered, including 6,781 from New Zealand, and 7,850 were sold. There was a good selection, chiefly of New Zealand cross-breds, which, together with the best Australian merinos, sold actively to the home trade and the Continent. Greasy merinos are now from par to 5 per cent, dearer, and the withdrawals are chiefly among the slipes, owing to firm limits. New Zealand greasy cross-bred: “ Motukawa,” 9d and lOd. Ltd. have received official cable advice from Messrs Anning and Cobb, of London, stating that the rabbitskin sale which was scheduled to take place on May 25 is now cancelled, the main reason being lack of American competition. This has come about through the U.S.A buyers being unable to dress and dye their last year’s purchases, owing to a general strike in New York. At the same time, it is expected that payable prices will be obtained by trappers throughout the coming winter season, as the Australian crop is fully 30 per cent, lower this year than last.
