(Received May 12, at 11 a.m.) The work of recovering the bodies from the Markham colliery continued throughout the night, and early this morning officials of the company and inspectors descended into the pit to make a preliminary examination to discover the cause of the explosion. Nation-wide sympathy is expressed with the bereaved families of the small village of Duckmanton, where most of the miners lived. One of the earliest messages received was from the King, who stated:. “The Queen and I were shocked to hear of the terrible explosion and the heavy loss of life involved. Please convey our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved relatives and to those who are still in anxiety. We shmild like also to he informed how the injured are progressing. EIGHTY DEATHS.
