DEMPSTER A CENTURY

NEW ZEALANDER'S SOLID BATTING AUSTRALIA WINS AGAIN THIRD SUCCESSIVE INNINGS VICTORY LONDON, May 10. Australia heat Leicester by an innings and 163 runs, giving the tourists their third successive innings victory. The wicket was still true when Dempster (50) and Dowen (1) resumed Leicester’s second innings, with five wickets down for 107. M'Cormick twice struck Dowen, who again appeared unable to use his feet to avoid the rising ball. O’Reilly’s first four overs were maidens. Dempster, playing like a rock, was often in difficulties, and was half an hour before adding to his score. Dowen meanwhile was scoring steadily, but was out leg before to O’Reilly. Geary had a short life, swinging heavily at Ward and being stumped. Walsh just survived the next ball and then skied a catch to Badcock in the outfield. Dempster played for the strike now. He attacked Ward and got a beautiful 4 through the covers. He then survived a confident appeal by Ward. The New Zealander was creeping towards his century when Dawkes played one on to his wicket, leaving only Flamson to stay with Dempster, who was then 93. The latter reached his century in 175 minutes. Five minutes later he lifted Ward into Badcock’s hands. He played a persistent and chanceless, but not a really distinguished, innings. He hit 14 4’s. Details:— AUSTRALIA.
