SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

[From Our Balclutha Correspondent.) \ FOOTBALL, The following referees have been appointed for- Saturday’s matches:— Crescent T. v. Toko. 1., at Milton, Mr L. Edwards; Clinton 1. v. Clutha 1., at Balclutha, Mr G. Fraser; Star v. Gatlins, at .Owaka, Mr A. Gawn; Union v. Valley, •at Clydevale, Mr J. Martin ; Toko. If,, v. Crescent, at Kaitangata, Mr J. Perriam'; Clutha IL ( v. Clinton XL, at Clinton, Mr W. Caldwell; Toko. 111. v. Clutha 111., at Milton (1.30), Mr S. M‘Noe. Saturday’s matches will conclude the preliminary round of senior grade games. In senior A the four teams at present each have a win to their credit and the position is very interesting. The idea is that the lowest team in this 1 section should play the top team in senior B to decide which team will go into the A section, and on present appearances it looks as if a play-off will be necessary, as two teams at least will have equal points. In the B section Catlins is the only team so far unbeaten, while Star have had a win and a draw. These .two teams meet on Saturday, and this mhtch should decide which team will play-off for the place in the A section. When this is decided the competition proper for seniors will commence. S.O, HOSPITAL BOARD. Mr A. Rennie presided over the monthly meeting of the South Otago Hospital Board, s held in Balclutha yesterday. The receipts for the month totalled £BSB 18s 2d, and the expenditure £1,438 12s 3d. The credit balance on April 30 was £1,816 13s, compared with £3,516 5s lid on April 1. The medical superintendent (Dr _D. G. Radcliffe) submitted the following returns of admissions, discharges, etc., for the month, the figures for the corresponding month last year being in parentheses:—Balclutha Hospital: Admissions 55 (68), discharges -54 (65), remaining 59 (54), X-ray examinations 10 (21), massage treatment outpatients 63 (87). Kaitangata; Admissions 7 (15), discharges 5 (13), remaining 3 (3), outpatients 3 (12). —Received. The Prime Minister wrote acknowledging receipt of the board’s letter of congratulation with reference to the national health and superannuation scheme.—Mr D. M'Gregor remarked that_ the congratulations were a bit previous, as the scheme was /only a partial one, and not what he had thought it was—superannuation for all. —Members pointed out that there was really nothing definite as yet, and they did not know what the scheme would finally be. Being the last meeting of the present board, the Chairman expressed the hope that all members would be returned at the elections. He had derived a great deal of pleasure at presiding during the last two years, and he thanked members for the support accorded him and courtesy extended to him at all times. He also tendered his thanks to the office, medical, and nursing staffs. He had been associated with the board since its inception, and was also on the Separation Committee.—Several members also paid a tribute to the work of the chairman, under whom, they said, it had been a pleasure bo sit. Whichever way the elections went they would have the satisfaction of knowing that they had all tried to do their best. Members had given valuable service, and it was hoped the ratepayers would appreciate this on the morrow. Reference was made to the illness of Mr John Christie, who was not seeking re-election, and it was decided to send a letter expressing sympathy with him in his illness and wishing him a speedy recovery.
