ORPHANS’ CLUB

■" / OPENING NIGHT OF SEASON Members of the Dunedin Orphans’ Club look forward to the opening of a new season with as much eagerness as the average football “ fan ” anticipates the “kick-off” which is the signal for a series of possibly thrilling and certainly interesting events. There was, therefore, a large attendance at the club’s rooms last night, when the 1938 session was inaugurated. The president (Bro. A. C. Hanlon, K.C.), was in the chair, and the proceedings opened in the customary manner with the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem and the club’s opening ode, which “welcomed here from near and far” members and visitors. So far as visitors were concerned, some of them had come from a distance ; one, for instance, was from Uganda, East Africa, while others (mostly members of kindred clubs) were from Wellington, Timaru, Palmerston North, Oamaru, Winton, and Kaikoura, as well as from the environs of Dunedin. ■ . During the evening two new members received their badges at the hands of the president, while seniority bars were presented to Bros. A. F. Cheyne, H. T. Trevena, and J. Hope (20 years membership), G. J. Barton, J. L. Bell, A H. Dali, A. N. Holmes, D. A. Murdoch, and (R. S. M‘Naught. (10 years). Two others, foundation members of the club who now live away from Dunedin, became eligible for 40year bars. These were Bros. W. Brown and W. H. Irvine. Mr Brown jun., received ‘the one on behalf of his father, while Mr Irvine’s will he forwarded.

An enjoyable programme was presented by Bros. E. S. Ottrey J. Paterson, R. M'Dougall, C. R. Williamson, G. Macdonald, A. Moore (vocal solos), M. Johnson (violinsolo), H. M. Eggers (ventriloquial item), F. Newmarch (ledgerdemain), and R. Wilson Brown (humorous song). The club orchestra, (under Bro. H. Davie, deputising for Bro. J. Clark), rendered a number of items, and Bro. Alf Pettitt acted as accompanist. The President announced that the next gathering of the club on May 24 would take the form of an Empire night,” and that Bro. W. Dowme Stewart would deliver the address on that occasion. ~ I The proceedings closed with the singling of the National Anthem.
