CAPPING BALL

IN HONOUR OF THE GRADUATES OF 1938 BRILLIANT FUNCTION IN THE TOWN HALL The Town Hall presented a very striking appearance on Monday evening, w'hen the Capping Ball, given in honour of the vear’s graduates, was staged by the Chancellor of the Otago University and members of the Students’ Association. A very unusual and attractive decorative scheme had been chosen, and was very much admired by the large crowd of dancers, numbering some 800, who attended the

function. The hall was festooned across with dainty fluttering streamers in all the varying shades of fuchsia and cyclamen which swayed with the movements of the dancers. The stage was quite a triumph of the decorator’s art, where scattered in profusion were baskets of artificial flowers, carried out in tonings to match the scheme of the main hall to make a picturesque background for the abundance of ferns and greenery with which this part of the hall was richly supplied. The softlyshaded lighting effects enhanced the picturesqueness of the scene, and the long baskets complete with blooms stood out in bold relief when the lights in the hall were dimmed. A spotlight with its constantly-changing colours picked out the couples as they circled the floor, and its vivid rays chased up and down the walls, around the floor, and back again to the members of the orchestra, who were seated on the stage. The Concert Chamber, where supper ■was served, had also received attention from the decorators, and conspicuous at each table were the colours of Otago University—blue and gold. 1 Large vases of chrysanthemums adorned the tables, which were draped in a simple but effective manner.

Reception of Graduates. The graduates, who wore academic dress for the first part of the evening, were received at the entrance by the president of the Students’ Association, Mr W. D. Borrie, and the lady vicepresident, Miss Doris Francis, whose charming and unusual gown of grape bloom taffeta displayed a trained back of rainbow tonings, set into the waistline in godets and flaring out in a most fascinating fashion as the wearer danced. She wore a dainty posy at the neckline, and in her hair to match the colours of the skirt and earned a bouquet of pink ixias and violets, the gift of the Students’ Association. Associated with them were the Chancellor, Mr W. J. Morrell, and Mrs Morrell, the latter wearing a graceful trained gown of black velvet with a corsage spray of mauve orchids, which toned with her bouquet of chrysanthemums and violets, also a gift from the Students’ Association. The chaperons for the evening were: Dr and Mrs . J. Turner, the latter wearing a frock of peacock green satin with a short ooatee in fuchsia taffeta, and Dr and Mrs C. M.
