The Milton branch of the League of Mothers held a “ fathers and sons’ ” evening in the Miller Hall on Tuesday last, which proved a very successful function. Mrs H. M'Callum welcomed the visitors and thanked them one and "all for coming to support the meeting. After the league hymn and prayer, a short vocal programme was given by Mrs H. Brown, Rev. Daglish, and Mr L. Scott, Mrs Daglish ana Mrs C. Keinan acting as accompanists. An outstanding talk on ‘ World Affairs ’ was given by Mr D. J. Sumpter. Mrs A. Herbert, on behalf of the members, thanked the speaker for the very capable manner in which this interesting subject was presented, and also proposed a vote of thanks to the artists who had performed during the programme. -An excellent supper was provided by the members, after which * verse of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close. The Milton branch of the Women’s Institute celebrated its sixth birthday on May 4 in St, John’s Hall. There was a large attendance of friends and visitors from Benhar, Balclutha, Kaitangata, and Lovell’s Flat. The evening commenced with games and competitions, followed by the singing _of ‘ Comrades and Friends.’ The following programme was presented:—Songs by Miss L. Fiddes, Miss Curran, and Mr Clarke (Lovell’s Flat); playette, * Widows,’ in which the parts were taken by Mesdames J. Fiddes, W. Walker, and S. Porter; -pianoforte duet, Mrs Keinan and Miss Curran; piano-accordion solo, Mrs J. ,S. Lambert. Supper followed, and the birthday cake, .made and decorated) by the president (Mrs James Gray), was piped in with all due ceremony by Piper B. Burleigh; Mrs Tweedie (Kaitangata) lighting the candles and Mrs Williams (president of the Benhar branch) blowing them out. Miss Clarke, of Lovell’s Flat, cut the cake. Each of these ladies thanked the Milton branch for'its welcome. The winners of the competitions were Mrs Ross, Mrs Joyce, and Mr Michelle. The" prize for most points during the year was won by Mrs E. Oliver. The evening was concluded with dancing, the music being supplied by Mrs Charles Keinan and Mrs J. B. Sinclair. St. Clair Women’s Club.

Two popular members, Mrs F. L. Lawrence and Mrs G. H. Greene, were responsible for the entertainment at the St. Clair Women’s Club last Mondlay evening, and in their capable bands'ia delightful programme was carried to : ar successful conclusion. Mrs Douglas Paine, the president, occupied the chair. The first item, a play, 'Auntie’a Journey,’ was given byMesdames C. Thomson, J. R. Bode, G. H. Greene, and Miss 0. Quai-termain, and right throughout a high standard of acting, was displayed. Next Mrs J. Eustace delightedl the audience with a song, ‘ Sing, Joyous Bird,' and her encore number was ‘Advice.’ Mesdames M. A.'Robson and A. Ocfewell sang the duet, ‘ Life’s Lullaby,’ very sweetly, and following this was a recitation by Mrs F. L. Lawrence, ‘ Dagabert the Jester,’ and as an encore Mrs Lawrence gave ‘The Culprit.’ 4 Short-nin Bread,’ sung by Mrs J. M'Laughlan, received well-deserved applause, and Mrs_ J. R. Bode then gave two outstanding Maori the double poi and a song in Maori, ‘Pu Pu Hui.’ M'aedames C. Thomson and C, Aitken acted as accompanists. The final item was a comedy playette, ‘ Borrowed Plumes,’ and in this Mesdames F. L.' Lawrence and J. Eustace excelled themselves. Mrs Booth voiced a well-cleserved vote of /thanks, and the evening was voted a great success by all present.
