LINER NIAGARA

SPLENDID SAILING RECORD Plying the highways of the Pacific Ocean, the Canadian Australasian liner Niagara has completed 25 years of continuous service. The anniversary of the Niagara’s first visit to Auckland on May 3, 1913, was to be celebrated when the vessel is at Vancouver at the conclusion of her voyage north. The ship has standing to hier credit some 150 round voyages between Australasia and Canada, and her .record is unblemished by serious accident, although in the war years her commander and officers occasionally had reason to worry for the safety of the ship. • . . . ■ On one occasion, it is said, the Niagara was ‘ ‘spotted ” by a seaplane from the German raider Wolf, but by clapping on speed she was enabled to outdistance the enemy. In those years the Niagara maintained her service, steamipg at night without her tights, and sometimes deviating from her course for safety. The Niagara in her lifetime has had only six permanent masters. The present commander is Captain W. Martin.
