OUTSTANDING SCULLER

R. B. SMITH'S PERFORMANCES A SOUND CLUB WORKER The outstanding sculler in the Dominion at present, 11, B. Smith, of the Auckland Club, is steadily building up a record which promises to be one of the most interesting as well as the most formidable in the history of the sport in this country (says the Auckland ‘ Herald ’). He won the New Zealand single sculls championship at Wanganui by a length after being four lengths away from the leader with half a mile to go. In the double sculls, with A. Morey, he gave an outstanding display to retain the championship title. Another splendid performance was given by Smith in the championship eights, in which he stroked the Auckland boat. In this event, with less than half a mile to go, Smith’s crew was six lengths the leader. In bringing the crew within less than a length of the winning boat at the finish Smith displayed rare stamina. A\ modest sportsman, Smith is a sound worker for the Auckland Club, and nothing is too much trouble for him when he is doing anything in its interests. This is the fourth time Smith has won the single sculls title of New Zealand. His success in the double sculls represents his third win in the event, once with Jackson, of the Waitemata Club, in 1934, and twice with A. Morey. He represented the Dominion at the recent Empire Games. Still young, he shows promise of adding further to his laurels.
