SHARP SHEEP RISE

CATTLE APPRECIATE SLIGHTLY BURNSIDE STOCK SALES Fat cattle opened at late rates at the Burnside stock sales to-day, these values being maintained until the final race, when a /rise of fully 10s was noticeable on all prime sorts. Keen competition was experienced for all- fat sheep showing quality. There was a small supply of these types, so that ewes and wethers sold at prices fully 3s fid in advance of those of last week at the outset. Even medium types participated in the appreciation to the extent of 2s. Indications were that a further rise would- be found over the closing stages owing to the short supplied of butchers’ sheep. Fat lambs shpwed a slight rise of about Is where finish was shown. Though fat cattle had a small entry fo-day (about 333) than at the last ■ale there was a better average quality shown. Amongst' the heavy bullocks were a few trucks of excellent quality; these were backed up by some fine consignments of medium weighs. However, the greater part of this sex clearly showed the effects of the feed shortage, and consequently were of poor type. Cows and heifers had a good entry. _ Some were really prime, but, as usual* indifferent quality was noticeable in the majority, while there was the same tailing of weedy, sorts. The sale opened well, especially for prime grades —other sorts were inclined to drag. Opening rates were maintained almost throughout, but on the final race values for primes appreciated in some cases by 10s. v ‘

Only a few tracks of prime' heavy wethers were present in the small yarding of 1,100 fat sheep. Although there was a fair penning of this sex only a small percentage was up to the standard required by butchers, the majority being only good stores. After taking out four tracks of prime ewes the balance were plain—only ordinary freezing sorts. The sale opened with very keen competition at values fully 3s ’fid above the last sale for prime wethers and ewes. Even medium sorts shpwed a rise of 2s. The indications were that values would remain firm to the finish, owing to the short entry of good sheep. Very poor qualify was displayed by the medium yarding of fat lambs; there were no more than three trucks of finished type in the entry. Unfinished sorts comprised the balance, while there was a tailing of very poor quality. However, the sale was a Buoyant one, with keen competition for primes at prices fully Is fid above schedule rates, or about Is up on those of last week. Medium sorts brought late rates. Vealers had a large entry of approximately 100, including some very prime sorts. Competition was keen, prices ranging from 5s to 10s above late rates. The selection of the yarding realised to £4 2s fid, medium-weights from £2 5s to £3 ss, and lights from £1 10s to £2. A line of three and four-year-old bullocks from the Lakes district was included in a very full yarding of store cattle. Several pens of good two and three-year-old local cattle _ were also forward. Good types were in demand, with prices showing little variation from last week. The best three-year-olds brought to £9 10s, ordinary three-year-olds from £7 2s fid to £B, two-year-olds from £3 15s to £5 15s, heifers from £2 15s to £5, and young cows from £3 5s to £4 10s._ Boner cows, of which there was a medium yarding, sold at late rates. Both porkers and baconers were about 2s dearer all round than last week, though the prices a pound were about the same.
