to Mrs Norah Ross’s letter in the Press, he reiterated that the conditions of the Hospital staff were far from ideal, and said they should be greatly bettered from what they were to-day, no matter where the money came from. He also described Hr Newlands’s statement that the ' old people at the Talboys Home were adequately provided for as an insult to the residents of that institution.

Mr Ralph Harrison claimed that, as the ideals of those who wore listed as the Citizens’ candidates had not kept pace with modern thought, they must be replaced. His address was on general lines. Mr Silverstone gave considerable attention to the statements made by Cr Allen in his mayoral campaign, and also took strong exception to certain criticisms based on statements which candidates were supposed to have uttered. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks and confidence in the speakers and their party. AT ST. HILDA Labour Party candidates addressed a meeting in the St. Kilda Town Hall last night. Mr J. Robinson, who is contesting the St. Kilda mayoralty, said that the forthcoming election was more than a local body election. It was of national significance, for if the Labour Party Js opponents got control of the council it would do a great deal towards hampering the Government’s policy or even depriving the country of a Government. He expressed the opinion that party politics were necessary in local body matters, and in the present instance a Labour council in St. Kilda and in the city could do much for the city and suburban areas by co-operat-ing with the Government. Mr J. H. Clinch, who is standing for the Hospital Board as well as for the Borough Council, confined himself to a discussion on Hospital affairs, and advocated further provision for charitable aid, improvements at Talboys Home, and better conditions for the staffs of the institutions under the board’s control. Mr E. W. Hunter emphasised the importance of closer co-operation between local bodies and the Government, and said that a Labour Council would make fullest use of subsidies offered by the Government. It would also organise the resources of the borough, so that a programme of road and footpath improvement and street naming and lighting could be carried out. Mr W. E. Ruttledge promised, if elected to the council, to advocate an improved tram service, an opportunity to purchase tram concession tickets in the borough, and an extension of the Tahuna line, and also said that a Labour council would take steps to have concession tickets recognised on the Forbury route on race days. The erection of dressing sheds on the (reserves in the borough, the beautifying of Royal Crescent and Forbury Crescent, and the utilisation of portion of the Drainage Board’s property near Bowen street were proposed by Mr G. Wilson, who also advocated the clearing of the strip of land between St. Kilda and Tahuna Park for the purpose of erecting a row of houses. Messrs J. W. Munro, M.P., R. Walls, and P. G. Connolly spoke on Harbour Board matters, and Mr M. Silverstone dealt with Hospital Board affairs. After Messrs J. M. Homer, J. G. Jamieson, J. M'Tigue, and J. W. Lunam bad been introduced to the audience, the candidates were accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.
