FOOTBALL

RUGBY O.R.F.U. COMMITTEE The Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union held its weekly meeting last night. The president (Mr A. C. Haynes) was in the chair. TONGA PARK GROUND. “ We have been very badly treated,” said Mr D. C. Jolly, when introducing a complaint about the inequitable marking off of Tonga Park. The Hockey Association had now been allocated four areas, and the Rugby ground had been shifted to an undesirable section. Every time a goal was kicked the ball disappeared into a Chinaman’s garden; “ The ground is not fit to play football on,” he added. Mr D. Spedding: We have been sidetracked all along. Delegates discussed whether the union could do without Tonga Park each Saturday, but no finality was reached. Mr V. G. Cavanagh summarised the opinion of those present when he said that it was the “ duty of the Reserves Committee to give an equitable distribution of the various grounds.” The following motion was then carried:—“That the City Council be informed that the ground allocated to the O.R.F.U. at Tonga Park, owing to its layout, is unfit to play football on, and that a deputation will bring the matter before the Reserves Committee.” A motion was also passed that the O.F.A. be asked to attend the meeting with the Reserves Committee in conjunction with the O.R.F.U. delegates.

SENIOR PLAYER CAUTIONED. At the request of the committee Mr F. Henderson, referee of the senior game Union-University A, played on April 23, attended the meeting to amplify a written report on his cautioning of F. Vorrath for playing a University man not in possession of the ball. Questioned whether Vorrath had spoken to him, Mr Henderson admitted ho had, but did not want to pass those remarks on. “ They were made solely to me, and I do not think any good could come out of publishing those remarks. 1 am not prepared to be crossquestioned on fact.” Mr Henderson, asked what would be Vorrath’s aim in tackling the man, thought that the player was “getting a bit disgusted ” with his team, and in the heat of the moment lost his head. Mr H. Harris considered it hardly fair to hear Mr Henderson’s extended report without hearing the other side of the matter. Referees were not consistent in their actions—one referee censured a player for a certain offence, hut other referees passed the same offence over. After discussion it was decided that no action he taken, so that Vorrath’s name would automatically go on to the “ cautioned ” list. HOCKEY TEAM’S VISIT. The Otago Hockey Association requested the use of Carisbrook on July 9 for a test match between a side representing the New Zealand Universities and an Indian team, and also on July 7 for a game against Otago. The Otago Women’s Hockey j Association applied for the use of Carisbrook on June 25, the occasion of an Otago representative match with an all-Eng-land women’s side. A deputation waited on the meeting in support of the application. Both applications were granted, the matches to be held early. GROUNDS FOR SCHOOL MATCHES. The Town Clerk advised that representations had been made to the council’s Reserves Committee by the primary and secondary schools relative to the use of playing areas for school matches during the present season, and the committee had decided to give the schools sole control of all the open grounds owned by the council on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and up to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The schools had given an assurance that no matches would be played on these grounds on Saturday mornings when the union had decided to postpone all junior matches.—Messrs S. G. Styche and H. Harris were appointed to interview the Reserves Committee on the subject. TERRITORIAL ASSOCIATION. Dr Roland Fulton and Mr James Hogg spoke on the recently-formed Territorial Association, emphasising its worthy objects and stressing the necessity for the adequate defence of New Zealand. The association intended approaching local organisations seeking support, and if the Rugby Union acceded to the request members of the local football clubs would be addressed. Mr Hogg observed that in 1914 it was the Rugby players who contributed more than any other section of the community to the Dominion’s oversea forces.—lt was decided to commend the movement to the clubs.

TRANSFERS GRANTED. The following transfers were granted!:—S. R. Reynolds (Gore) to Dunedin, D. M'Lauchlan (Port Chalmers) to Zingari-Richmond, D. Wilson (Clinton) to Dunedin, A. GENERAL, In view of the success of the addresses delivered by Messrs V. G. Cavanagh and J. M. Briggs last week to club captains, coaches, and referees, it was decided to hold a similar evening on May 15. The Secretary of the Tuapeka Subunion forwarded the following motion: —“Whilst congratulating the Vincent Sub-union on securing a game against the Bay of Plenty this subunion deprecates the action of the Otago delegates in agreeing to preferential treatment to one sub-union.” The Tuapeka sub-union was of the opinion that it would have been quite practicable to pick a combined subunion team to play Bay of Plenty.— Mr Speckling reported that the game had been tentatively arranged by Mr Parata, who explained the position to delegates at the New Zealand Union meeting, and they decided to fall into line with the proposal. Delegates had no say in the matter. The Kaikorai Football Club inquired whether it could enter a . team in the third grade competition.—Referred to Flag Committee. The Southland Rugby Union sought approval in granting the application of the Tahakopa Football Club for registration in its sub-union.—The South Otago Sub-union to be asked if it had any objection to the scheme.
