SEA TREASURES
WEALTH FROM GREEK WATERS The Greek seas, as well bb the Greek soil, teem with treasures of antique art it has been repeatedly proved in the last two decades. Some 10 years ago Greek fishers drew out of the sea of Artemission a bronze horse with its rider (usually called the Little Jockey), dating from the pre-Phidiac period. From this beautiful work of art, remarkable for its vivacity, part of its back was missing. Greek fishers recently came upon the missing part of this statue, at a place where other discoveries had been made. Investigations have established the authenticity of this missing piece. Fishermen found a number of bronze statuettes of great archaeological value in the waters of St. Galini. All the objects have been placed in the Museum Rethimno, where they are being studied. Archaeologists believe that these objects came from a wrecked transport ship or a pirate vessel.
