FALTBOATING
HEW GERMAN RECREATION A conversation with friends just back from Faltboating in Germany started us. I had thought a faltboat (folding boat) a sort of collapsible rubber bathtub, but our beautiful two-seater, 18ft long and weighing only 501bs, was as trim as a yacht (writes Cornelia Stratton Parker). Four inches of water floated it, yet it could safely ride waves and rapids. Folded, it fitted into what might be a golf bag. . My daughter and I paddled eight rivers that summer in Austria and Germany, covering 750 miles. Stopping for a picnic lunch, how good it was to stretch out, read, and day dream, then get ourselves snug in the boat again and push off, lords of all we surveyed. How we gloried in the wooded cliffs and vine-terraced hills, the ancient villages and castle tuins. If yofl would see Kurope at its most romantic, spend the daytime paddling down its rivers, landing at d isk to prowl some historic stronghold. The past is yours without the asking.
