NORTH OTAGO NOTES

(From Our Oamaru Correspondent.) On Saturday Mr J. A. Lee (Parliamentary Under-Secretary to the Minister of Finance and in Charge of Housing), accompanied by his private secretary (Mr F. G. Temm) and the Director' of Housing Construction x (Mr A. Tyndall), visited Oamaru and inspected the new State houses in Dart street. In the evening Mr Lee addressed a large audience at the Opera House, dealing mainly with the results of the Government’s policy since 1935. Mr Leo departed yesterday for Timaru. OAMARU GARDENS. A feature of the Oamaru Gardens m present is a remarkable and vei - y beautiful display of chrysanthemums in the glasshouse. KAKANUI ATHEN7EUM. The annual meeting of the Kakauin Athenmum and Hall Trust was well attended. The following committee was elected:—Messrs J. A. Tyson (chairman), J. MThail (secretary), A. Paton (treasurer), C. Dalgety, M. Sinclair, W. Dalgety, and A. Ormandy. WAITAKI GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL. The golden jubilee celebrations of the Waitaki Girls’ High School opened on Saturday. A civic reception was accorded, the old girls at the Opera House by the mayor (Mr M. F. E Cooney).' With him. on the stage were the mayoress, Miss J. B. Wilson (present principal of the school), Mis* C. Ferguson (ex-principal), Miss .C. Lindsay (chairwoman of the Jubilee Committee), Major H. S. Orbell (chairman of the High School Board), and Mr J.' Rodman (chairman of the Waitaki County Council). The Mayor welcomed all ex-pupils who had come to attend the jubilee functions, and said Oamaru was promt of the school’s great record. Mr Rod ; man endorsed the mayor’s remarks and Miss Lindsay replied. After the reception a floral tribute was laid at the foot of the memorial oak to the first principal, Mrs M. G. Burn, by Miss J. G. Hood, one of the earliest pupils. BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the Oamaru Beautifving Society was presided over by Dr R. S. Orbell. The financial statement showed that £167 had been received through cqllec tions and £8 15s in other donations The sum of £941 had been paid out in wages, of which £897 represented Government subsidies. The Returned Soldiers’ Association had contributed £22. Dr Orbell said lie believed that, in the 30 years of the society’s existence, well over 10,000 trees had been planted.
