NORTH OTAGO NOTES

[From Odr Oamatiti Correspondent.]

WAITAKI GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL

The jubilee celebrations of the Waitaki Girls’ High School were continued on Saturday night and yesterday. Nearly 500 ex-pupils attended the jubilee banquet on Saturday night at the school hall, which was beautifully decorated. Miss C. Lindsay (president of the Jubilee Committee) presided.

The Mayor of Oamaru (Mr M. P. E. Cooney) proposed the toast of the school, and paid a tribute to the work of the three principals—Mrs Burn, Miss Ferguson, and Miss Wilson. He said the junior high school system had been an outstanding success in Oamaru. . Miss J. G. Hood replied for the first decade (1887-97). Miss J. Edwards for the second (1897-1907), Miss Fyfe for the third, Miss C. Miller for the fourth, Miss H. Sutcliffe for the fifth, and Miss J. Thomson for the present pupils.

Congratulations were expressed by Mr F. Milner (rector of the Waitaki Boys’ High School) and Mr W. M. Cooper (Education Board). Other speakers were Mr H. S. Orbell, Mr K. Familton, Miss J. B. Wilson (lady principal), Misses A. M. Budd, M. J. Macaulay, H. Sumpter, J. Bennett, M. Meldrum, J. B. Romans, E. M. Will, Mr J. Rodman, and Miss Lindsay. . At the banquet held at the Waitaki Girls’ High School the Mayor of Oamaru (Mr M. P. E. Cooney), who is a member of the High School Board, expressed the opinion that the proposal to abolish the Waitaki Board and place the Waitaki schools under the jurisdiction of the Otago Education Board was not a sound one. The position of the two schools to-day was largely due to the board. , , Miss J. B. Wilson (principal of the Girls’ School) said few people seemed to realise the enormous amount of detail involved in the management of _ these very large institutions. A principal needed to be in constant touch with the administrative body, and, if the schools were administered from Dunedin, there would be constant irksome delays, resuiting in inefficiency. ... Mr Frank Milner (rector of the Boys . School) said the schools should be left alone and allowed to retain their own governing body. WOMEN’S CLUB. At the monthly musical hour of the North Otago Women’s Club a programme, arranged by Mrs Miles Parker, was presented. Those contributing numbers were Miss Cartwright, Mesdames K. Familton, A. C. Piper. Mies Tweed, Mrs J. Tait, and Mrs Tweed. Mrs J. M. Forrester (president) proposed a volte of thanks to the hostess and performers. ATHLETIC FOOTBALL CLUB. Members of the Athletic Football Club tendered an enjoyable social evening to Messrs W. Budd and E. Holland. Mr Budd, who has left to reside in Timaru, was presented with a barometer, and Mr Holland, who is removing to Christchurch, was given an electric jug. Mr D. Burns (president) expressed the club’s good wishes to the departing members, who suitably replied. RETURNED SOLDIERS' ASSOCIATION, The annual report of the Oamaru Returned Soldiers’ Association records a membership of 456. Two strong subassociations at Hampden and Kurow had continued very active. The sale of poppies had been very successful. A grant of £lO for comforts for the sick was acknowledged from the St. John Ambulance Association.
