May 8. “ This visit seats the German ' and Italian understanding which we so firmly willed and tenaciously constructed, and which has an historic function in parallel, permanent interests for our nations.” So declared Signor Mussolini in welcoming Herr Hitler at a banquet which 200 persons attended in Palazzo Vienzia. “Fascist Italy,”'M Duce continued, “ knows only one ethical law—friendship, which is obtained by German and Italian collaboration consecrated in the Rota e-Berlin axis. Italy and Germany -have abandoned Utopias, to which Europe has blindly entrusted its fortunes, in order to seek between ourselves with others a regime of, international co-operation which may erect more effective guarantees c>f justice, security, and equitable peace. This can only be reached when the elementary rights of each people to live, work, and defend itself are loyally recognised, and the political equilibrium corresponds with historical realites.” ' .Herr Hitler, responding, said: ” Nazism and Fascism have created in two new and powerful nations a bloc of 120,000,000 people who are determined to preserve the eternal right to live and protect their equal-interests in an ideological unity against all forces endeavouring to resist their natural development. “It is my unsnakeable will and legacy to Germany,” the Fubrer continued. “that it.for ever regards the Italian arid German Alpine frontier as inviolable. Just .as you and the Italians preserved friendship towards Germany in' decisive days, so shall I and my people show Italy friendship in. a serious hour.” AIR AND ARTILLERY DISPLAYS ROME, ( May 8. (Received May 9, at 10.5 a.m.) Herr Hitler, gazing skyward at 300 manoeuvring aeroplanes, complimented Signor Mussolini in the presence of King ' Victor Emmanuel on Ids “ Roman eagles,” when the postponed air display was held at the Furbara aerodrome. Skilful pilots impressively demonstrated aerobatics and target bombing. • Herr Hitler subsequently witnessed an artillery field day at Santa Marmilla. TRAM? STEAMERS SUNK PRACTICE FOR SALVAGE WORK. ROME, May 8. (Received May 9, at 1 p.m.) Twelve bombers sank in 22ft of water in order to permit subsequent salvage for scrap iron two 3,000-ton tramp steamers. Herr'Hitler and others saw the preliminary explosions, but concentrated bombing by projectiles weighing 2cwt and upwards raised such a -pall that nothing was visible till it cleared, when the vessels, torn and gashed, lay at the bottom. These events demonstrated to the world that the legitimate aiid vital interests of great nations must in all cases be taken into account. “ It is self-apparent,” he said, “ that our work of understanding will go forward. 1 know that for Italy and .Germany there is a great and fruitful future. Italy and Germany together will not only facilitate permanent pence, but with their guaranteed" co-operation will form a bridge of mutual help and support.”
