PERMANENT WAVE DAMAGES
WOMAN'S PRIDE IN HAIR LONDON, April 10. Damages amounting to £275, with costs, were awarded by Mr Justice Singleton in the King’s Bench Division to Miss Eleanor Gertrude Dear, of Frith street, Soho, for personal injuries caused by a permanent wave. Miss Dear, a mannequin and former dancer, professionally known as Barbara Dean, sued Mr Frederick Korn, hairdresser, of Little Bulteney street, W., and Cadex (England) Ltd., of Dean street. She had a permanent wave at Mr Korn’s establishment with a Cadex machine. She alleged negligence against both defendants and breach of contract against Mr Korn. Her case was that her hair was burned and came out when combed. As a result she had had to wear a semiwig and side pieces, and owing to nervous trouble had to give up her employment. Giving judgment, Mr Justice Singleton said that the importance of a good head of hair to anyone on the stage or to a mannequin was very great. Miss Dear was rightly proud of her hair, although some might hold the view that bleached hair was not desirable. On the evidence he was satisfied that when dealing with bleached hair great care was necessary, as the reagent used might cause damage if not quite correct. Counsel mentioned that third party proceedings were ponding by Mr Korit against Cadex. but in view of the judge s muling it might bo necessary merely to ask for a consent order.
