SURF CHAMPIONSHIPS
DISPLAY AT ORETI BEACH DOUBLE WIN FOR ST. GLAIR By winning both the Otago senior and junior surf championships at Oreti Beach on Sunday afternoon the St. Clair Surf Club added considerably to its already fine reputation as a surf patrol team. Despite a strong breeze blowing off the sea a splendid display of life saving was watched by a fair crowd of spectators. The senior six-man rescue and resuscitation event was sternly contested, and the Oreti team put up a fine performance. The work of both teams was excellent. The St. Clair men showed all-round ability, but it was their water time that gave them the victory. This competition was one of, the best seen at Oreti Beach for some time. ■ Competition was keen in the junior championship. This team’s work generally was good, its weak point being resuscitation. The Oreti team put in some solid work, but lacked finish. With more experience it should develop into a good combination. The junior' four-man surf relay was not The senior teams competed for possession of the Sports Trust Shieldj which was formerly held by the Oreti Club. St. Clair, the New Zealand champion team and holder of the Nelson Shield, will be the new holder of the trophy. “ I must congratulate the St. Clair teams on their success,” said Mr A. J. Kingsland, president of the Oreti Surf Club, in presenting the trophy to the St. Clair team. He remarked that the senior championship was a keenly-contested event, and the Southland team put up a splendid showing. Actually there were only about 5 points separating the teams’ totals. Mr Kingsland added that they all appreciated the visit of the St. Clair surf teams very much. The results were as follow; SENIOR SIX-MEN CHAMPIONSHIP. St. Clair (C. Elliot, E. Toase, W. Warren, H. D.
