VARIED LOCATIONS

•THE BROKEN MELODY COMPANY ! Members of 4 The Broken Melody ’ Company have worked at several interesting locations during the production. First of all there was the beautiful home, “ Kooyong,” at Warawee, of Judge Markel, of the New South Wales judiciary. “ Kooyong ” has been widely written up, especially by the pictorial Press, because of its magnificent gardens, but particularly on account of Judge Markel’s famous collection of orchids, Mrs Markel proudly displayed these treasures, garnered from all over the world. Lloyd Hughes, the popular star of ‘ The Broken and incidentally 4 Lovers and Luggers,’ was tremendously interested, declaring that he had never before seen anything like them.

Another interesting day was spent on board the Orient liner Orion, where, apart from doing some important work, the Cinesound unit provided entertainment for a number of overseas passengers. The tourists seized the opportunity of taking some unusual snapshots of Lloyd Hughes, Diana du Cane, Alec Kelleway, and June Munro, and members of the technical unit. Election day was spent, most unusually, in an hotel bar. On this day all bars in New South Wales were closed by law, but by arrangement the Cinesound Company were permitted to work in the saloon bar of the Carlton Hotel. The house guests peeped curiously into the forbidden territory from time to time.. The visitors included Mr Norman B. Rydge, who had a twofold interest in the proceedings, inasmuch as he is chairman of directors <?f the Carlton and also of Cinesound. The artists taking part in the action were Lloyd Hiighes,. Alee Kelleway, Pat Twohill, Lyn Armytage, and Miss Vai Clift. Mr Twohill was celebrating a birthday, but as he neither drinks nor smokes the environment meant nothing

to him, even on his birthday—or election day. In fact, he became rather distressed because of his part in the picture, in which he had to appear to smoke a number of cigarettes.
