UNNAZIFIED OBERAMMERGAU
The Homan Catholic Church authorities in Oberammergau have just won an unexpected victory (writes Peterborough, in the London ‘ Daily Telegraph’). In spite of pressure by the Nazis to bring Oberammergau into line, the 1940 production of the ‘ Passion Play ’ will take place as scheduled. There will be no alteration . either in the text or in the religious character of the play. This, I learn, is entirely duo to Herr Hitler’s intervention. Ever since the 1934 production there have been repeated efforts to have the ‘ Passion Play ’ changed. A new text, adapted to conform with Nazi ideology, was actually in preparation. It was to have been used for the forthcoming production, but has now been abandoned.,
