Edstern Districts, at Dunedin. April 15, 16, 18, and Island and Otago championship and handicap tournament, at Logan Park. Dunedin. Interclub Matches. The second last round of the men’s A grade matches was played last Saturday afternoon in ideal weather conditions. The surprise of the day was the defeat of Roslyn, one of the leading teams, by St. Clair. In the first single Bryan was taken to three sets by Swallow. Lawrence gained an excellent victory for St. Clair when he accounted for Sincock in straight sets. The St. Clair man had the game in band all the time, and on the day proved himself to be the stronger player. Yeoman played his best game for the season when he took M‘Donald to 6-5 in the first set, but the Roslyn man’s placing was too good for his opponent in the second set. M'Kenzie, St. Clair, showed improved form when he placed his team in a winning position by defeating Grimsdale, 6-6, 6-2. The latter, however, was suffering from the effects of influenza and did not produce his best form. The surprise of the day, however, was St. Clair’s two victories in the men s doubles. Both pairs of the St._ Clair team combined better than their opponents, and they fully earned their victories. Anderson’s Bay went near to causing an upset in its match against Otago. The latter was without the services of E. Boddy, whose place was taken by his brother Howard. A good match was seen in the first singles between Robertson and Ross ; The Anderson’s Bay man made his opponent fight hard for every point, and it was only Robertson’s ability to volley for winners which gave him the match. Pollock played delightful tennis to defeat Young fairly easily. Pollock drove exceptionally well on both hands, while his overhead shots carried more pace than usual. Duthie showed a return 1 to his true form when he completely outplayed Kaye to win for the loss of only five games. Spiers went near to causing an upset when, after winning the first set against H. Boddy, he had a match point in the second set. He, however, missed an easy chance to finish off the match, and Boddy fought back gamely and gained the decision. The doubles were evenly divided. . Kaituna had » somewhat easy victory over Nga Maara, the latter team winning only 18 games to its opponent’s 72 Kaituna and Otago have thus- both come through to the final round without losing a match, and when these teams meet on Saturday week a good match should be witnessed. Cosy Dell moved up to second position equal with Roslyn and St. Uair by its defeat of North-east Y a “ e y last Saturday. Falconer gave bis team a good start by defeating JoUy in straight sets, but Valentine evened the match when he outplayed Cameron to gain a good victory. The remaining gmgles and both doubles were won by Cosy DelL

The following tables give the position of the teams in the (B and C grade competitions:— B I. GRADE.

Otago v. South Canterbury. The first representative match of the Season will be played to-morrow, when • Otago will meet South Canterbury at , Maori Park, Timaru. The match will ■ be played on grassland, as a number ot the Otago players have had very little experience on grass they will be playing under a considerable handicap. However, the Otago men are as strong a combination as there is available, and on their present form they should more than hold their own. Of the ladies, Mrs Rawlinson, Miss Kerr, Miss Bridges, and Miss Hayward have had grass court experience, and as South Canterbury has no outstanding lady players at the present time, these players should score victories m the majority of their matches. Cleghorn and Walker Cups. Plavers in these competitions are reminded that all first round matches are to be completed by Monday.next, February 28. and second round matches by March 7. Results of all matches should be given to Mr Grimsdale, Otago Sports Depot, where a copy of the draw may bo seen.
