FLOWER SHOW. - The Maheno-Inohholme flower show was one of the best that has’ been held in the district this season, -A : splendid standard was-reached in the section for nine varieties of cut blooms. Miss Innes being the winner. Mrs B. Dewar, sen., had an excellent display of phlox drummondi. Mrs Hunter showed the champion gladioli. Prominent in the deco- ; rative classes were Miss M. Dewar, Mrs ’■ J. Newlands, Mrs Carlton, Miss F. Newlands, Mrs A. Clark, Mrs W. Yofston, and Miss B. Dewar. Miss ,V. Clark showed the best collection of vegetables. ' WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. At the meeting oL the South Hill Women’s Institute, Mrs Familton was elected president for the coming year. Miss Pattle gave a brief address, and Mesdames Symonds and Willett sang duets. Competitions resulted:—Best bloom, Mrs Bartlett 1, Mrs Rawson 2. Pikelets, ■ Mrs Whittaker 1, Mrs Patterson 2, Mrs Shirkey 3. Sugar bag article, Mrs Whittaker 1, Mrs Patterson and Mrs Oats (equal) 2. INQUEST. An inquest concerning the death of .... Mr . George Fiddes, of Duntroon, was " held - at Samara yesterday. Deceased was a widower, aged 64 years, and had lived by himself on his farm. On the night of February 2 he was found suffering from a'gunshot wound and lying near a track about 400 yards from his home. Constable John O’Connell gave evidence that Mr Fiddes, who was conscious when found, said his feet had gone, from under him and the gun had gone off. The verdict was that death .was ’the result of the accidental discharge of a gun while deceased was rabbit shooting ATHLETE WELCOMED. Miss Betty Forbes, Oamaru’s representative at the Empire Games, returned home yesterday, and was accorded a hearty welcome by the deputymayor (Cr K. Familton) and a number . of citizens. Mr Familton congratulated Miss Forbes on the excellence of her performance in the ladies’ high i‘ ump. He also gave credit to Mr R. 3. Dimick (president of the North ’ Otago Amateur Athletic Sub-centre) ' for the practical interest he had taken in Miss Forbes’s athletic career. SOUTH SCHOOL PICNIC. Owing to the heavy rain at Hampden early this morning, the Oamaru South School picnic was indefinitely postponed. This was the second post- ' ponement, and so a sports programme [ was arranged for the school _ pupils. Standards I.' and H. held a picnic at Friendly Bay, and Standards HI. and r. XV. spent the afternoon playing games at King George’s Park. ‘ OBITUARY. i ■ The death has occurred at Wanganui of , Mrs D. S. Montagu, widow of the late ’.-.Mr David Somers Montague, who was a well-known grain merchant in Oamaru many years ago. Mrs Montagu was a daughter of the late Mr Edward artist, of Oamaru. DUNTROON SALE. At the Duntroon Bale_ there was a fair yarding of sheep. Mixed sex lambs realised 12s 2d, 17s sd, to 20s 8d; fat ' wethers to 21s; fat lambs, 21s; two- - tooth cross-bred 'wethers, 17s 9d. AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
