KILLED BY FALL OF STONE. A well-known coal miner, Robert Knight, aged 56 years, of Runanga, a married man, was killed yesterday by a fall of stone in Messrs Q'Brien and : party’s co-operative colliery at Rewanui, (near Greymouth). The deceased was engaged at the face in. the high pillar section when over 500 ton* of stone dropped upon -him from the roof without warning. His mate, William Armstrong, had a fortunate escape, having to run from the failing stone. It required over six hours to extricate Knight’s body, which was buried to a depth of 20 feet. _ Death was apparently due to suffocation. The deceased, who was a native of Australia, was related to Mrs R. Semple, and was an early president of the State Miners’ Union, and at the time of his death president of .the Runanga Labour Party. BOY DROWNED IN BATHS. While playing around the swimming baths at Cromwell on Thursday morning,. Albert George Tuffley, ... the six-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Charlea Edward Tuffley, who had recently removed to Cromwell from Invercargill, fell into deep Vrater. His brother and sister, who were also at the baths, ran for assistance, and the body was recovered shortly afterwards. Artificial respiration was practised for over ah hour, but with no success. An inquest was held in the evening before tho district coroner (Mr Ernest Jolly), who returned a verdict of accidental drowning. HEAD INJURIES. As a result of a collision between two motor cars at Green Island last even-, ing James Dale, a boy who was travelling in one of the vehicles, suffered head injuries and was removed to the Hospital, to which he was admitted at 9.30 p.m. He resides at Torquay street, Kaitangata. UNIDENTIFIED BODY. The fully-dothed body of a man wa« found at the wharves to-day, reports an Association message from Wellington. It appeared to have been in tho water for about a month.
