TOWN ASKS FOR TAX INCREASE
The inhabitants of Puck, a little town in Polish Pomerania, not far from Danzig, have just startled everybody by petitioning the Treasury to increase their taxes. “ W© want them to be increased by 20. per cent.,” runs the petition to the income tax authorities. Puck has recently become a wealthy town, and its inhabitants are anxious to increase the importance of the place by various municipal improvements. As the authorities _ refused to give the funds the inhabitants resolved voluntarily to impose a higher tax on themselves, and thus induce the authorities to spend more money on town planning.
