UNREST IN GERMAN ARMY

TENSENESS IN RELATIONS WITH GOVERNMENT THREE GENERALS RESIGN Press Association—By Telegraph—CopyrigM LONDON, February 9. The Berlin correspondent of ‘ The Times ’ says: “ The continuing uncertainty concerning future relations between the army and the Government has been responsible for the tenseness which is still brooding over the situation. The so-called compromise has caused much discontent amongst the officers, resulting in the resignation of three, generals, and has also divided the army into sympathisers of the dismissed generals and supporters of the Government. Thus politics have been introduced into the army, whereas previously they were excluded in the interests of discipline. The officers’ discontent might pass quickly if they thought that the reorganisation was final, but the changes have raised the possibility of a series of difficult problems which will develop if the Nazi Party attempts to transform the Reichswehr into a Nazi army. It is believed that Herr Hitler is not desirous of forcing the pace with such demauds, but the army’s morale is bound to be affected by the knowledge that they are being held over, while personal uncertainties and fear of the secret police and the supervisor of appointments are also depressing. ” REICHSWEHR SYMPATHISERS ARRESTED BASLE, February 10. (Received February 11, at 11 a.m.) The Gestapo is reported to be arresting many sympathisers with the Reichswehr in the Rhineland provinces. It is understood that the German frontiers bordering Switzerland and France are being closed shortly to prevent escapes.
