Won in Record Time Champagne Stakes to Dunstan Increase in Investments The prices obtained for wool at Wednesday’s sale in no way affected the success of the opening day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s 1938 Cup Meeting, and the attendance at IWingatui yesterday afternoon was one of the largest seen on the course for some years. The weather was one of Otago s best summer days, almost oppressively hot at times, but otherwise very pleasant, and the brighter colours of the costumes worn by the fairer sex, helped by the good show of flowers in the garden plots, gave the gathering quite a gay appearance. The racing was interesting throughout the afternoon, and the Cup a fine race. Unfortunately the Champagne Stakes was spoiled by a quite unnecessarily long delay at the barrier, and then a poor start was effected, two of the bestfancied candidates being badly left. Throughout the afternoon the starting was not up to Mr Gieseler’s usual standard, and in several of the races the fields were sent away to snap or moving-in starts. Unfortunately the scratching pen was freely used in the last two races, only four going to the post in the concluding event. This naturally affected the totalisator investments, but during the afternoon £9,730 passed through the win machine, and £10,222 10s through the place totalisator, making a total of £19,961 10s, an increase of £8,170 10s on last year’s turnover. Excepting for the delays at the start of the hurdles and two-years-olds’ race, punctuality was well observed, and the day’s racing excellently managed. The going was on the firm side, too hard for some of the horses to show their true-form,, but otherwise the track was in splendid order, as proved by the good times recorded during the day.

CHAMPAGNE STAKES, £350; second 50, third 25. For two-year-olds. Six furlongs. 3-3 DUNSTAN, Mr J. Beattie’s hr c, by Siegfried—Arbitration, 8.10 (C. T. Wilson, 4) 1 5- —Passaform, Mr W. J. M'Laren’s b o 8.10, car. B.IOJ (A. E. Ellis, 6) 2 6- —Netherlea, Mr J. Morrison’s br o, 8.10 (P. Spratt, 5) 3. Also started: 8-9 Atua Rere 8.10 (C. Humphries, 2),'7-7 Prince Ruenalf 8.10 (W. Jenkins, 8), 9-8 Pink Lad 8.10 (M. Caddy, 3), 1-1 Raeburn 8.10 (L. J. Ellis, 7), 4-4 Ortyx 8.10 (J. W. Jennings, 1), 2-2 Good Passage 8.7 (G. Humphries, 9). Betting: Raeburn (908-597), Good Passage (575-566), Dunstan (343-451), Ortyx (243-403). Good Passage refused to line up, and repeatedly got rid of her rider. After about 20 minutes’ delay, she broke away from her rider after again throwing him and the race was started without her. From a poor start both Raeburn and Ortyx were left, and Netherlea and Dunstan raced away together nearly two lengths clear from Atua Rere. At the far turn Netherlea and Dunstan were racing together nearly two lengths in front of Ortyx, who got a good run next the rails, Passaform, and Raeburn. Dunstan and Netherlea were still together turning for home, with Ortyx, Passaform, and Raeburn next. Passaform joined Dunstan and Netherlea at the distance, where Ortyx failed in her attempt to get through next the rails! In a splendid finish Dunstan beat Passaform by a head, with Netherlea a neck away third, half a length in front of Ortyx. Raeburn was next, the others beaten off. Time, Imin 16 3-ssec.

Sea Fox moved up along the back, and as the field made the far turn he followed Song Boy, with Daring Deed and the favourite next. Approaching the home turn Good Sun headed Sea Fox, and was three lengths behind Song Boy when straightened for home. At the distance Good Sun was inclined to run in from the whip, and Ellis had to straighten him np. Finishing well, he beat Song Boy by a length. Queen Dorothy was three lengths away third.
