The big handicap of the day provided a close and exciting finish, Tempest (also Dunedinowned) winning by a neck from Graham Direct, with War Buoy a head away. NOTES ON THE RAGING [By St. Cl.uk.] Derby Day at Addington was favoured with bright sunshine, but a fairly strong wind rose in the afternoon which tempered the atmosphere nicely, but helped to slow down the times. There was an excellent attendance for an off-day, and the totalisator staff, after the first day’s experience, handled the money offering much more readily, and the £44,702 invested represented an increase of £4,305 on the total on the corresponding day last year. The track, though well watered overnight, carried a good deal of loose stuff on the top, but this favoured horses that had been feeling the effects of hard tracks. Though the fields were much smaller than generally seen at this centre, the racing was excellent, and the finishes in at east three of the races were so close that only the judge could say which horse won.

The Oilivier Handicap produced one of of these finishes, and Tempest scored by the narrowest of margins through the leaders leaving him an opening next the rails that his speed allowed him to take advantage of, De Soto, who was a hot favourite, appeared to. be indifferently handled over the last three furlongs, and finished just out of the money.

The start for the Derby was a catch one, and at least three of the eight candidates were not properly sot when the barrier was released. The winner Twos Loose, owned and bred by Mr G. R. Hudson, won well, and it is doubtful if Sandusky, the favourite, could have beaten him had he had the advantage of a good start. Over the final stages the Dunedin-owned colt drew right away from his field. With half a mile to go Sandusky was well placed, but inclined to skip, and over the last two furlongs he failed to catch the outsider Perula. Refund had every chance, but failed to stay, and Horsepower, after ing close up to the winner at the home turn, stopped very badly.

Blair Athol showed he can both sprint and stay by winning the Metropolitan Handicap, and his victory was a most spectacular one. Well within 100yds from the post ho was well pocketed on the rails, then an opening offered, and he flashed through to win by a head. Similar margins separated him from Elvo, Iraq, and Renown’s Best, and it was one of the best finishes ever staged at Addington. It was interesting to note that on the day’s card Mr G. J. Barton’s horses appeared as trained by J. Fraser, jun., who has been first horseman to the stable for some years.

Captain Bolt (1,378-1,071) was sent out an odds-on chauco in both machines lor the Whiteleigh Handicap, for uuhoppled trotters, with Honeymoon (366-566) and Prince Harvester (320-551) next fancied. Debutante led Prince Harvester and the faVourite over the first quarter, then the lastnamed ran into second place. At the end of a mile Captain Bolt headed off Prince Harvester, and, drawing right away, won, pulling up, by 30 lengths from Debutante, who beat Little Beta three lengths, and Helen’s Bay was next. • • • • For the Ellesmere Handicap Frisco Boy (1,322-1,157), Waipahi (800-793), Toorak (575-874), Ginger Jack (410543), Celebrity (342-530), and Esplendor (283-497) were the best backed. When the field settled down llepeal was in charge from Priceless, Toorak, Esplendor, and Frisco Boy, and this order was not changed entering the final Jap. As the field raced along the back in close order the favourite appeared to be well pocketed. Hounding the far turn Repeal and Esplendor were still in charge, with Toorak, Aircraft, Frisco Boy, Waipahi, and Green Mantle all in a, bunch. Repeal was first into the straight from Esplendor and Aircraft, with Toorak still next the rails. Less than 100yds from the post the favourite was pulled out very sharply from the rails, and got up to beat Toorak half a length. Esplendor was two lengths away third, followed by Aircraft, Belle Grattan, and Waipahi. . * * * *

Only King's Warrior, who was lame after his fall on the first day, was missing from the Ollivier Handicap, and De Soto (2,254-1,577), War Buoy (9611,401), Graham Direct (737-950), Tempest-Cloudy Range bracket (6751,265), and Pot Luck (329-774), were the best backed. Willow Wave lost fully 50yds at the start and Pot Luck was slow to move. Bingen Palm led Evicus, Tempest, Glenrossie. Reporter, Pot Luck, and War Buoy over the first mile and a half, the first named winning the two £SO lap prizes for being first past the post at the end of four and 10 furlongs. Then Evicus took charge and led round the far turn from Tempest. Then Cloudy Range and War Buoy moved up, and Evicus was closely attended by Cloudy Range, War Buoy, Tempest, and Graham Direct turning for home. At the distance War Buay looked the winner, then Graham Direct on the outside, ran up to him. Both left a wide opening next the rails, and Tempest shot through to win by a short neck from Graham Direct, who heat War Buoy a head. Willow Wave, De Soto, and Glenrossie were next. Willow Wave’s performance was one of the outstanding features of the day’s racing. Ho lost fully 50yds through failing to go away smartly, (latching up this lost ground very gradually he put in a wonderful run from the home turn to finish fourth, and will only have to remain sound to win big races again.

Blair Athol was withdrawn from the Leliovre Handicap, for which the bracketed pair, Lady Fame and King’s Play (2,119-1,724), and Parisienne (2.040-1,383) were the only chances solidly backed. Raydus led out from Lady Fame and Sea Gift, King’s Play losing some ground at the start. At the end of half a mile Haydns was leading Lady Fame and Parisienne, who went to a break shortly afterwards. At the end of a mile King’s Play ran to the front, a.nd Lady Fame 'shortly afterwards was in second place. This pair were not afterwards troubled, King’s Play winning easily by two lengths from his stable mate. Big Author was six lengths off third, with Raydue next. After breaking a second time at the end of a mile and a-quarter Parisienne was pulled up.

Sandusky (2,231-1,568), Refund (1,469-1,367), Two’s Loose (944-1,322), and Horsepower (750-1,063) were the best backed in the New Zealand Derby Stakes.

The start was a really bad one, the chances of Tanrna and Rerekohau being completely spoiled, and Sandusky was slow to get away. Two’s Loose got tbe best of the start, and led Refund, Bayard, and Peru!a. out of the straight. At the end of six furlongs Two’s Loose was racing two lengths in front of Horsepower, Refund, and Perula. Two’s Loose raced well clear from Horsepower and Refund along the back, hut at the far turn Refund retired _ beaten. Twos Loose was two lengths in front of Horsepower when he turned for home, with Perula and Sandusky handv. Horsepower then stopped badly and twos Loose ran home an easy winner by five lengths from Perula, who hung on to beat Sandusky a Head. Taruna, Bayard, Horsepower, Refund, and Rerekohau finished in that order. * * * • The Barton bracket, Golden Eagle and Great Admiral (2,103-1,715), Waikato Prince (1.294-1,304), Tlotsam (393-832), Franz Derby (240-494), and lliscord (185-357) were the best backed for tbe Sockburn Handicap, for unhoppled trotters. Franz Derby led Flotsam and Raclaim over the first half-mile, then Franz Derby broke, leaving Flotsam to lead into the last lap from Raclaim, who broke, Golden Eagle, Garner, and Groat Admiral. Flotsam led along the back and round the far turn from Golden Eagle, Fifa, Great Admiral, and Waikato Prince. Flotsam was three lengths clear from Golden Eagle at the home turn, with Fifa and Waikato Prince next, and drew away to win comfortably by nearly three lengths from Waikato Prince. Golden Eagle was four lengths further back third, then followed Fifa, Garner, Discord, and Norman Fox. * * * * Parisienne was withdrawn from the Metropolitan Handicap, and Blair Athol (1,499-1,216), Kewpie’s Bond (805-850), Harlequin (568-753), Casanova (433-586), and Iraq (401-677) wore the best backed. On Parade and Casanova lost their chances at the start, and Harlequin, Elvo, Golden Direct, and Golden Cross were the early leaders. Entering the last lap Harlequin was a length in front of Elvo, with Golden Cross, Golden Direct, Kewpie’s Bond, and Iraq next. There was little change racing along the back, and Harlequin and Elvo led Kewpie’s Bond, Iraq, Renown’s Best, and Blair Athol, _ all racing in close order, into the straight. At the distance the favourite was lucky to have an opening made for him, and, finishing with a great burst of speed, beat Elvo a short head, ahd only similar margins separated Iraq and Renown’s Best. Eighteen Carat and Kewpie’s Bond were next. * * S In a field of six for the Clarkson Handicap Village Guy (1,961-1,184), Bonny Azure (1,709-1,087), and Supertax (1,384-993) were the best backed. Bonny Azure went away at a tangle, losing about 30yds, and Bingen Palm led along the back. At the end of two furlongs Bonny Azure raced past Bingen Palm and led her into the final lap, with Rocks Ahead and Village Guy next. Bonny Azure and Bingen Palm were together turning for home, with Supertax next. At the distance Supertax had drawn clear, but over the last 50yds was stoutly challenged by Village Guy and suffered defeat by a head. Bonny Azure was four lengths away third, with Rocks Ahead and Evicus next.
