THE SENATE POSITION GOVERNMENT HOPEFUL OF MAJORITY Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, November 4. Interest in, the Federal election returns is now focussed on the counting of preferences for the Senate, which has begun in the smaller States. The Government is hopeful of winning three Senate seats in South Australia and in Queensland. Should the Government win in those two States the party strength in the Senate would be 23-13 in favour of the Government. TASMANIAN COUNTING COMPLETED. SYDNEY, November 5.: (Received November 5, at 11 a.m.) The completion rf the distribution of preferences in Tasmania _ resulted in the return of the two remaining Labour candidates, Mr R. Darcy and Mr C. Lamp. Two of the three Labour candidates, Messrs J. Barnes and D. Cameron, were elected to fill the Victorian vacancies in the Senate. It is expected that the third Labour candidate, Mr R. Keane, will be elected after further allocation of preferences to-day. According to the Chief Commonwealth Electoral Officer, the polling at the Federal elections was the highest on record. The px-esent figures indicate that 96 per cent, of 4,084,000 electors voted.
