PROPOSED CLOSING OF CUMBER* LAND STREET HOSPITAL BOARD'S REQUEST The Works Committee of the City Council recommends that the request of the Hospital Board for the closing of portion of Cumberland street to facilitate hospital extensions be not acceded to. * , The committee’s report on the subject is as follows:—“A request has been submitted by a deputation from the Otago Hospital Board for the oouncil’s assistance in the matter of the closing of that part of Cumberland street between Hanover street and Frederick street in connection with proposed hospital extensions in this area. The committee has given careful consideration to the proposal, and, whilst it is desirous of the board in any way. possible, it is of the opinion that the -closing of the street would not be advisable in view of the traffic requirements of that portion of the city. It is therefore recommended that the board he advised that the council is unable to accede to the suggestion, but that every facility will be given in the matter of the provision of access between the various departments of the hospital by means of covered bridges over or subways under the street.”
